A contribution to Mark Barone's Act of Dog Campaign

Poem Artwork

When I had a family, my heart was full of joy

I was the great companion of a lovely little boy

We went for walks and played great games

Of Frisbee, tag and ball

They’d take me to the park where I could

Rummage round and roll

But then I turned around one day, to find that they had gone

I couldn’t believe my family had left me on my own

I roamed the streets, so desperate to find them once again

Hungry, lonely and depressed, my search was all in vain

One day a man reached out to me, I was grateful for his thought

I wanted him to find the loving family I sought

He handled me with apathy. His touch was cold and hard

He shoved me in a wire cage and drove me to a yard

My cage was stacked with others, full of mislaid dogs like me

_I very quickly learned that this was not the place to be

A pretty little collie in the cage next door to mine

Was crying in the corner and I could not help but whine

She told me there was no place now, that we could hope to go

This horrid cage is all there is. We're trapped here, on Death Row.

Art work by American artist, Mark Barone, who is now hard at work, painting 5,500 of these portraits of abandoned dogs, killed in shelters and pounds across America, to raise awareness about their plight, and to promote adoption. You can see these paintings on the wall on the website. (Link below) When he is finished, these paintings will reside in a museum. It is hoped that this campaign will continue to raise awareness (for all animals) and reach out world-wide.

Ruan,
So sad. I am a dog owner and animal lover. I would never mistreat my baby, I feel for all the mistreated animals out there and there are many.

Many blessings,
+Linda

How apt your portrayal of a doggie “death row.” When did it come to this? When did people buy cute puppies in a store to take them home and then throw them away like some disposable toy? Who are these people? Why do they behave like animals to their animals?

I can't answer those questions. I can only lash out with voice and pen to those who would perpetrate such atrocities. Thanks for writing your heart.

Ron

What a wonderful and touching poem of awareness of a dogs life after they get abanden. Such sadness seen in the picture provided by Mark. Such a inhumane treatment to such a loving creature who provided joy and comfort to someone in their life. God Bless you for this wonderful poem of awareness. George AKA THE WISE OLD OWL

This is dreadful, and with what Ed says, it makes it seem surreal and inhumane.

For every one left behind that my little rescue group manages to save, fifty more are rounded up and sent to that gas chamber. Multiply that by just about every town in America, and it so sadly adds up to the 5,500 innocent throw-aways now being put down every single day.

I shout Adopt! Please Adopt! but hardly anyone listens anymore.

Yep. Sad. I wish I could adopt every last one of them. I do what I can.
