(Speaks for itself)

Poem Artwork

‘twas filthy in the murkish mire

Besieged by densely misted ridge

Whilst scourging dirt for sense or scent

To aid this nightly pilgrimage

I turn my ear ‘longside the wind

Should slightest sound direct my quest

‘tis mine to hunt and so provide

The weaklings with a wholesome guest

As seasons change cut through the night

My grip did slide, my footfall lurch

And haunting hoot of nightfall’s bird

Came drifting from its lofty perch

My coat now drenched and marrow chill

Whilst bitter bite of lunar’s glass

Renders hedgerows hushed and turns

The fog to frost and crisps the grass

Trail gone cold and tracks that fade

For frosted earth will not betray

Cruel jack, lacing sodden land

Excels in shielding shadowed prey

At last, the merest twitch of fur

‘neath glittering web of rambling roots

Softly, step beneath the breeze

And pounce ‘fore intuit refutes

With lightning strike the blow is dealt

And snatched, the bounty from its lair

Discern the path that heads me home

To feed the famished this nights fare.

Such is nature's way and you have eloquently shared a universal and timeless theme via your verses, Ruan. Well done. Love and peace to you,

As this poem proffers eloquently, nature provides, but also plays the paradoxical game of protection, knowing predator and prey are givens in the everyday quest for survival. Of particular note, the lyrical reality that is so easy to accept as natural to animals seems so foreign to most humans. As a species, there is a propensity to lunge forward, often blindly seeking but a visceral and momentary experience to satiate our appetites of both heart and intellect. Poetry such as this is a sure antidote for those so consumed. Thank you for posting. BTW, I was unaware of your work until a fellow writer on the site, Edward Phillips, brought you to my attention. I am indeed grateful.

Wild Animals will only hunt to survive;
We Humans now seem to enjoy taking lives.

The strong stalks the weak. Survival of the fittest in this world is the rule. The stalker hunts, the prey hides for naught. Those awaiting the stalker's return will be rewarded with food for all.
