Her youthful face, long flaming hair,
Blue eyes, so bright you’re pictured there
Her radiant smile that lights a room
And sweeps away all grief and gloom
Infectious laugh and wicked grin
Mischievous mind, sharp as a pin
A sense of style all of her own
A wholesome beauty, fine home grown
For me, her child, she was the key
To all things good and all things free
My love for her could not be bound
To me she was the best around
She wrote mad songs and painted dreams
Designed her garden, drafted schemes
Made music on her folk guitar
Her spirit was a shining star
But those who sought to dim her light
Made her flounder, flinch, take flight
Family sought, with blinkered views
To douse her flame with sombre hues
Those she’d trust and love and cherish
Caused her faith in them to perish
They broke her spirit, caged her heart
And pulled my Beauty’s world apart
No longer could she see the sun
Nor feel its warmth, her world undone
Withdrawn into a shell of steel
…and me, her child? She could not feel
I tried to reach her, soothe her pain
Heal her - Make her smile again
Give her strength to soar instead.
She looked at me, “One day” she said
I saw my Beauty so forlorn
Beaten down by those who scorn
Just because they could not see
My Beauty’s spontaneity
Their shallow minds and old ideals
Misread what such a mind reveals
They could not see, their cuts and stings
Won’t heal a bird with broken wings
~
The years went by and faded some
That ‘one day’, now will never come
My Beauty passed away, you see
Earth’s shackles gone, her spirit’s free.
Love ya!

This poem was torn from a piece of your heart. I hope your mother reads it, wherever she is. She would be so proud of you for your poetic muse.

nearly painful. There is also much beauty in the way you honor
her. I'm glad you can take comfort in her spirit's freedom. Your
poetry, as usual, is flawless. -Ed
