Thought I'd rattle a few cages

(...and that's 'Man' not men)

Poem Artwork

The Shallow whinge and moan their lot

They’re doing a job they hate

Their home-life isn’t what they dreamed, and neither is their mate

Discontent runs through their veins

They haven’t struck it rich

They’ve got it all – they’re well off …but their frickin’ life’s a bitch!

Flipside of this tarnished coin

How selfish they’ve become!

They’re blind to all the suffering, compassion now is numb

Wars no longer register

The sick and lame aren’t there

Cruelty and terror reign but they no longer care

People die in agony

And vagrants line the street

Animals are skinned alive, while tied up by their feet

And still these people whinge and moan

Complaining of their lot

Grieving for the novelties their houses haven’t got!

No thought is spared for all the strife

Their misplaced wrath could pause

If only they could redirect it at some worthy cause

On and on they verbalise

Each tiny fractious flaw

Ignoring every outstretched hand and every pleading paw

Blinkered by their personal gains

Deaf to other’s plight

Clutching each new asset close, as though it were a right

While all around there’s pain and fear

Victims, whipped and stoned

Children stolen from their beds. Thugs and thieves condoned

Families are cast aside

Pets, out on the street

The sick and starving left to die. They simply can’t compete

With plastic innovation

Or craved predominance

While media warps The Shallow’s minds, our world won’t stand a chance

There are those who do their bit

They’re small in number but

They battle on in hope, and pray that more will make the cut

They try to show the world’s Shallows

How thoughtless lives are fraught

With greed and envy, but how simply changes can be sought

If each donates one selfless deed

Forgoes one thing they’ve got

And helps instead one worthy cause, our world would have a shot

At bringing peace and harmony

In place of blood and tears

And nurturing a caring race, instead of funding fears.

If each donates one selfless deed
Forgoes one thing that they’ve got
And helps instead one worthy cause,
our world would probably have a shot

If Only...But I Guess We Can Dream.

Heartfelt poem. It's hard to notice the good. Feels like a dark time where the worst has yet to come. But if you look around there is always good.

The Shallows of whom you write are known here as the "haves" or the "wealthy" or 90 percent of those who known as "conservatives" or 80 percent of "religionists" or 99 percent of "Texans." Apart from those who are just plain stupid, have I left anyone out?

WOW, young lady, this is, geez I don't know a good enough word, maybe tremendous says it, but I think even that word is too little...well written, well thought out, well put together & other than the "man" being rich enough and having alot, it could be speaking of me directly and for that I am ashamed... <Peace> -e-

Too many people are self centered indeed. If everyone would find one person to help along this road of life, imagine what a different world this would be! Great poem here.

Love ya!

I am left quite wordless because every line expresses the sad truth and thus the condition of this world. Also, this is very well constructed. Thank you, Ruan. Love, peace, and best wishes to you,

We are a selfish, self-centered lot. Myself included. I always enjoy your poetry for its powerful expression. This one strikes home to the central problem of humankind. We are still in survival mode where self-preservation seems to trump everything else. We use trite words like "freedom" to cover our lack of control and avarice. And always think that we are better than they are… Whoever they are?

Your poem reaches out to all those causing pain and suffering and pokes a hole in their pomposity. Good for you. I'm with you all the way.

Ahhh . . . You didn't rattle my cage, Ruan. I read this twice looking for something I might could call you on. Nothing was there. The only thing I would change is instead of "Man" insert "Human Race," but then that is nit-picking . . .
