Poem Artwork

Heavy with the windborne brine

Their dead weight drags on firm resolve

Dense mist suffocates the sun

As doubt and fear in turn revolve

With every biting gust of wind

The power of the mind abates

Then wrestles to control the rig

When perseverance emanates

To hoist these mighty sails aloft

Everything within is drawn

To summon valour from the deep

And set a course toward the dawn

Steer her through the cool grey waves

As black sails billow ‘gainst the clouds

And turn her bow towards the west

Away from dark and gloomy shrouds

Skim the ocean’s heaving breast

And ride the thrust of Titan’s brew

While airstreams carry storms of Thor

And challenge every straining clew

Until at last the dawn’s new light

Creeps soft across each sombre sail

Climbs the mast to yardarm’s height

And ‘lights on every glistening rail

Hope and faith light up the sky

And dance, as shadows fast unfold

Helius’ fierce and fiery steeds

Gild black sails with burning gold

Then mighty Thor is left behind

And frenzied sky gives way to brass

Turmoil fades on distant wakes

And broiling sea subsides to glass.

Another inspiring piece of wordsmithing, combining reality and myth, personal and objective longings, wanting but to find the answers that perhaps can only create the next round of questions, the next voyage to find the infinite grace of both your sunrises and sets, where even the black sails are held in momentary stillness, the magic and nature communicating with both man and sail cloth. Priceless.

What a delight to read your words that capture mind and imagination with charm and skill. You're "on top of your game" as we are wont to say here in the colonies. Nicely done, Ruan.

Such vivid imagery awakens the senses; I love the flow of this, Ruan. A classic form of poetry. Thank you for sharing. Love and best wishes,

Very good imagery. You feel the strength of those images when you close your eyes when someone reads the words to you. Ashiff

It's so good to see your poetry again. This one in old English style with a definite Viking thrust is classic. You write as though you have sailed the seas yourself. And the subtlety of your descriptive words are legendary. Kudos, poet! I wish I could write like that.

IM NOT INTO MYTHOLOGY BUT I AM INTO COMING THROUGH THE STORMS AND ROUGH SEAS OF LIFE BY THE POWERFUL LIGHT OF GOD, WHO ALWAYS DELIVERS US OUT OF THE GRASP OF TROUBLED WATERS...PLACING OUT FEET ON SOLID GROUND. TO ME THIS IS A TERRIFIC METAPHORICAL WORK, THE IMAGERY IS FANTASTIC. I LOVED IT AND I'M KEEPING IT. THANKS FOR SHARING, RUAN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I felt as if I was on that vessel myself!!! The imagery is out of this world and I just happen to be a big Thor fan, not the movie.

Love ya!

Ahhh . . . Never sailed on a boat powered by sails, but spent over ten years on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico doing seismograph work. Been through hurricanes, rescued people from rigs and platforms during the tumultuous storms. When the elements bring forth their wrath all you can really do is hunker down, and if a praying man, pray. Enjoyed this poem, Ruan.
