A tale within a tale

Poem Artwork

The townsfolk had a problem, their elders, all had died
And in their place, there came a crowd, who cheated, tricked and lied

A coven full of witches, concocting devil’s brew
Poisoned all the crops and tainted water with their stew

Along with them, a team derived of warlocks …wizards too
They joined the witch’s coven and they cast their spells anew
The townsfolk started getting sick and struggled to survive

They gave their goods to tricksters, for a chance to stay alive

Accepting wicked sorcery, a trade off for their health
And all the while the cult accumulated greater wealth
The spells they cast did little to protect the townsfolk’s ails

Man and woman, little child, would die in covert “jails”

More and more got sick and died. The town confused and scared
Of those still left, their bodies became weaker and impaired
The townsfolk calculated that the coven was to blame

They stood their ground and tried to bring an end to coven’s game

The warlocks brought in dragons, used to quell the angry hordes
And stand on guard, preventing folk from toppling overlords
While wizards conjured voices, selling tales, hooks and lies

Set eyes and ears everywhere, malicious, lordly spies

They watched the town most closely and removed each one aware
Till many who remained there, were much less inclined to care
But Nature has a weapon - she will shield a vital few
Fertile minds, impervious to immoral points of view

Witches, warlocks, wizards, have just one Achilles heel
They cannot comprehend ‘God given right’ to think and feel
They’ll always underestimate a man, within their plan

Assuming that he’s malleable, their fabricate ‘straw man’

The town must set a precedent, with rigor, power and might
To show such sorcerers the fatal error of their sleight
No matter who, or what the heights of magic and finesse
Protect the town, and all within, from illicit deviousness.

Brilliantly written, Ruan. As only you can do.
There's not only a tale within a tale, there is also
a moral, all wrapped in spellbinding poetry.

Your excellent poem brought to mind the guises prevailing throughout urban areas, the cities especially. Of course, media loves to promote and in a twisted way, glamourize these messengers of evil. Of late, news, TV and film have found the viewing and small reading community of humankind get off more on demons than real people. Sad. One can hope your poem reaches enough thinking people to get talked about. Write on.

I love your poem and am so glad that those kinds of evil people do not haunt our villages and towns these days except in their modern forms in the recesses of the Internet and in politics where they seem to want to gather with their conspiracies and money grubbing ways.

You left me when the warlocks brought in dragons. Although they are part of folklore going back to prehistoric China, dragons never existed except in the fearful minds of those who continued the story of their supposedly existence.
