Held fast by poetry and Beaudelaire
in a pencil skirt worn on Sunday rare
she enrolls and returns to school again
hoping for a chance of way back when
with solemn vow she pivots towards light
it shines like umpteen candles in the night
so strong is her desire to learn she glows
with every grade she aces now she knows
that life is a hindsight with second chances
when we believe, then we begin to dance
her Valedictory speech a brim of tears
thus a joyous moment in her twilight years
etched in the stars, a gratitude's soft bless
etched in her soul, a joy she can't suppress.
You mentioned that this is "a young girl's dream." Yet the poem appears to be about someone of advancing age finally graduating from college. Something that I often see in the news showing that even though one has missed out on earlier education it can still be acquired later in life.
But like Richard wrote, one should always be learning, whether in a formal setting or not. There is much to know, and we have so little life to learn it.
You mention Baudelaire. A lot of talent between him and Victor Hugo; another exceptional Frenchman. Though I was never a fan of Baudelaire's work, I do remember his piece 'The Living Torch'. Your piece (sonnet) is touching Vienna. Learning and growing should be a lifelong endeavor. There can be great joy in the process. Enjoyed your thoughts. Peace... r
