Come along now she'd say to me and then together we would knead
two strong arms and a floured face, this woman had love and speed
It was Christmas Eve, and I will never forget her zeal nor her passion
"Where did daddy hide my birthday cake?" she'd ask with a tiny smile.
She was born on Christmas Eve, and that took her as close to the babe
as anyone could get. In those days we didn't have much money,
mom would always give us pajamas, including dad.
Today as I recall our tiny silver tree, I feel blessed and very glad.
It was the seventies back in the good old days of Montreal,
we were rich in traditions, wealthy with love and laughter. We had
genuine guidance from struggling immigrants who knew the value
of sacrifice and love.
Later in the evening after a good plate of pasta and meatballs, dad
would whisper in my year, " Figlia, go get your moms cake" and
without being told where it was, I would go to the garage and fish
the cake out of the cantina. " Candles were lit and Christmas was
honored in the family, Happy Birthday mom, Merry
Christmas Jesus!

I often pass by postings that imply 'organized religion,' which isn't my cup of tea, but I respect it being just the right one for others. I nearly passed by the reading of this one, because of the title. That would have been a mistake.
I was genuinely surprised that this was not a religious message, but a beautiful reveal of the human heart. It embellishes my feelings about life today, which is already plenty grateful, moreso now from reading your writing here. Thank you ~~ djl
What a joyous memory poem about your mother and father dealt with Christmas and her birthday at the same time. Some families that are poor have ways of celebrating that are really genuine and not just commercial giveaways to see who can get the most or the most expensive gifts.
My twin brother and I, born on the 21st, often got one gift for the two of us that we would have to share. Some years, we did not get gifts, both on Christmas and our birthday, but only one. Like the year when we were 10 and got only one gift--the World Book Encyclopedia. Mom sent $10 a month to the company for 12 months so that it would be ready for Christmas. It was the most expensive and best gift we ever got! With many volumes, we usually shared reading them all from cover to cover in the supplements that came every year after that.
if there was any cake needed, mom baked it, as well as all the fabulous dinners, even for her birthday. We always got lemon cake and it was yummy with even lemon frosting made from scratch.
Some cool visuals in this Vienna. "Two strong arms and a floured face." Family memories can have a life of their own, especially like these. Enjoyed the read, Figlia Mia. Happy holidays. r
In "A Touch of Your Presence" are words that would inspire, encourage and strengthen one's soul when faced with challenges and difficulties and to know the awesomeness of God's power.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
P.S. The title is listed on Amazon under Look for Something Good by Robert Drews (not by Robert H. Drews)
