I don't understand my sugar levels...?

I have been more stressed, but I have been walking and eating better, still my numbers are all over the place...any help from out there...?

Poem Artwork

I've been a diabetic now for about a year,

And my numbers have been pretty clear,

One hundred twenty to at most 150,

But tonight I took it and it was around 203...

Why is it so high, as I haven't had any sugar,

I had a hoagie for dinner, Italian,

Drank diet pepsi like usual,

It couldn't have been the scallion...

Wanted to get a candy bar today,

But I told myself no way,

Could it be the heat, or my sunburn,

Wish I could more of diabetes learn,

I thought I was doing great till just of late,

Took another pill, even though I do feel really great,

Hoping by morning my level will be at a better lower rate...

ED - SOME GREAT ADVICE BELOW FROM OTHERS ...

PLUS - WALKING IN HEAT & STRESS CAN ELEVATE READING -

I PERSONALLY AM STILL AGAINST 'DIET' SODAS - ASPARTAME!

TRY HOME-BREWED GREEN TEA WITH NATURAL HONEY - JUST A TAD, AND GRADUALLY DIMINISH SAME UNTIL ACCUSTOMED TO TASTE - CHEAPER TOO!

CUZ 'MOTOR-MOUTH' ... TK.

Ed,
I am also diabetic and know what you mean about numbers going everywhere. I've gotten mine under better control, my last A1C was 10 six months ago, this week it was 8, so doing better. Hope you do too.

Thank you all for all your input/advice, I really do appreciate it...my numbers are back down after sleeping last night, to 148 instead of the 200 range...it REALLY scared me because just this time last year was when I went into that coma as that was when I first learned of my having diabetes...Maybe these higher numbers of late are caused by my memory of that, a little bit of stress therein, but again thanks to all that have and will have written to me regarding this problem...any info I can get is truly worth it...ED

Foods that raise your blood sugar level fast= Avoid: White bread, white flour, white potatoes, soda pop (each 12oz can has over 13 teaspoons of sugar in it!) Read labels, if there's over 7g of sugar in a serving, don't eat it! Everday stress, starchy foods & sugar all contribute to belly fat, and other illness. White pasta, White rice = all bad for diabetics!
Foods that get into your blood stream much slower, take longer to digest, make you feel satisfied, and don't raise you blood sugar fast, are good foods for a diabetic: Oatmeal, Whole Wheat or multi grain bread, multi grain cereals, multi grain or whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, green veggies, like spinach, greens, brocolli, string beans, lettuce, all cooked without fatty meats - use a little olive oil instead. Watch bottled salad dressings, they contain loads of hidden sugar! Use fresh lemon juice and a bit of olive oil instead. Eat 3 or 4 pieces of fruit a day, (1 piece at a time, between meals, but watch out for high sugar fruits like oranges, grapes, raisens & bananas - try a plum, peach, 2 kiwi, or a pear.)These will satisfy your sweet tooth. No candy, no ice cream, no cake, no pie! Watch your food portions, reduce your meat portions to 4 to 6 ozs twice a day, about the size of your palm. Eat lean poultry & fish - no fried foods! Eat 4 medium sized meals a day instead of 3 big meals. Don't eat at least 4 hours before going to bed. Eat fresh garlic in your foods, or take garlic capsules. Drink green tea with fresh lemon juice between meals. Try a 30 - 40 minute walk, sometime after dinner. All these tips will help you keep your blood sugar between 90 and 140 - help you keep your cholesterol low, and help you reach your ideal weight. Good luck!

120 to150 before fast or after fast? If after fast
then it's not too bad. A hoagie...white or whole grain??
Stay with whole grain and limit that to one portion per meal.

If you can stand it take two tablespoons of vinager
two times a day. This will help. Eat items like grilled
chicken salads with a vinagerette dressing.
High protein and low fat... Fat turns to sugar.
I have a website that Leah used that I will send you.

It does not mention vinager but this does work.

I don't have any health issues, (I'm just addicted to chocolate, that would be the thing) but I eat these wonderful chocolate bars which I read on the back of my labels that they (the "think thin" bars)make great snackings for someone with diabetes. they don't have any sugar and taste great...
I sure hope you get some answers and let's hope more advances are coming quickly along, and that the cure is also here soon ~
Best of health to you Ed!
Love,
Christine

I'm afraid as with my weight loss efforts it is really knowledge that is power. I have to know calorie counts and portion sizes, you probably need to be so aware of starches- and I suspect trial and error- knowing what you ate- and what surgar level resulted. I remember when I first learned to take blood sugar levels on clients I served I was tested myself and came up high. I had just had a wonderful pasta dinner.
So far I have escaped the need to be very concerned about sugar levels- but for weight loss I can look at alternative pastas and sauces- and I'm always on the look out for portion sizes. I'm OK myself- but if someone serves me something I honestly have to send HALF of it back.
One of my brothers and my future mother in law are diabetic. I'll try to find out what works for them.

The glucose testers are meant to be a guide and in order to get an accurate reading you need to do the testing on a regular basis and then take an average of each days testings over a period of time. All diabetics react to different stimulis differently and yes even the time of day or your mood can affect. If you can speak to a dietician at local diabetes centre and they will help you more, and yes I am diabetic too....
