...will poetry turn to rust...?

Poem Artwork

My dad used to tell me,
In the mid 60’s times,
The Beatles music will never last,
All this rock stuff will go away fast…

Well, as we all know that prediction,
Didn’t stand the test, thankfully,
Don’t know what I’d do without my music,
I like it all, even to a degree, rap,
Though, for the most part, of it I’d like to cap,
Country isn’t bad either, but again only to an extent,
And classical & jazz will be with us forever,
But I do also love the blues; they take away my blues…

But poetry, our own, or the greats,
Will it last & what will be its fates,
Kids do not get into poetry,
Though with music they get into idolatry,
So on the shelves books do gather dust,
After we leave this plain, our own poems will go to rust…

Most will, some will remain like that "path less traveled." And some will be surprises, becoming classics when critics or readers thought they were not very good when written and published. It was only later that their charm showed through.

By the way, rap is rather old form of poetry, just recently declared to be a music genre.

When all is said and done, we all become rust and dust, in the end.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day...
Drink to me only with thine eyes...
And this, above all, to thine own self be true...

Wisps of poetry that will last forever.

... but, in the meantime, it keeps us busy and out of mischief and you never know, someone may even actually get something out of it - especially us! :) Poetry is having something of a revival in one form or another, this side of the Pond. Probably something to do with short attention spans and the need to read nothing longer than the back of a cereal packet. Ashes to ashes... dust to dust... now THERE'S some memorable lines!! xx

Eh, another generation or the next poetry will rebound. We thew away most everything that pertained to the generation before us, and it will happen to this new generation.
