Can’t sleep tonight,
With my legs I am in a fight,
I don’t know what to do,
Regards meds, I need something new…
Maybe a muscle relaxer will work,
Right now I lay down and my legs start to jerk,
I have to get up and walk a bit,
The pain and spasms are as if I got hit…
I'm a member of your club. This morning was especially bad as I lie awake for over an hour before getting up. But I experience it also in my thighs. Right now, as I write this, both of my legs are pushing very hard against my wheelchair foot rests. Quite often they get to jerking in jump right off the foot rests.
Some good advice here. Have your potassium levels checked. I'm sure inactivity may be a culprit like it is with me. Bicycling would be great if you can do it. For many years I had trouble getting to sleep because of my legs. Stretching exercise before sleeping gave me mixed results. And then I got my Flexocisor that pedals my legs and moves my arms back and forth at about 15 mile-per-hour speed. That works, and I sleep well. The only drawback is that, by morning, lying so still in sleep, the spasms return. And, I'm building muscle in my thighs, making the spasms stronger.
Ed, this will sound crazy but I was getting that restless leg jerk a lot over the last couple years and I started riding a bicycle everyday, as I want to try to stay in some reasonable form of shape as i am getting older. It is pretty tiring, especially in this heat ( we have some great bike trails with a lot of larger oaks for shade on many of the paths here) but even though I am tired after, one benefit is my back and legs don't bother me anymore, really strange. Don't know if you can do that or if it would work but it sure stopped a lot of my back and legs ache. I do anywhere from 12 to 20 miles a day about 5 days a week.

Could you be low in potassium or could your potassium level be too high? Do you stay well hydrated? They do sell OTC remedies for leg cramps. Talk to your pharmacist before big pharma gets ahold of you!!
