It started as a story missing my winter, but...

Poem Artwork

Wha’ happened to my winter winds,
The kind that fills my ships sails,
The kind that comes with nor’eastern gales,
Snow blowing, cleaning the sea of man’s sins…

Waves breaking o’er the prow,
Washing the decks of those men caught,
Top side doing the job of ordinary seamen,
The number one screaming up a row…

The ocean seemingly boiling,
The air so cold it could be cut with a knife,
The passengers below decks their pants soiling,
Ah, but this is the life of a sailing captain,
His ship, his wife, the crew wildlife.

When my parents came to Canada from France, my mother was pregnant with me. They crossed the Atlantic in December and it took seven days of stormy seas. My mother was sick the whole way. Your poem reminded me of the incredible hardships my parents endured to give their children a better life here in Canada. It took a lot of years of incredibly hard work, raising seven children etc. etc. I am forever grateful for what they did and humbled for where I am today because of their sacrifices. Your poem is very meaningful to me, Ed; although perhaps not the way in which you thought it might be. Love and peace to you,

Régis

Life at sea must be as rough as the waves. The poems seems to capture some of that wildness in its raw beauty. John

I really don't know why anyone would wish for stormy winter seas. I would only wish for calm tropical waters with a good breeze filling the sails. I experienced violent winter seas only once when we crossed Lake Michigan in November. The waves were so huge they rocked the car ferry mightily and the waves crested the bow with foam. It was a nightmarish crossing in the cold. Only my four-year-old twin brother and I didn't get seasick.

All hands on deck,
we're a long way from dock.
Captain's wife all alone,
pacing on widow's walk.

Being in (or on) the ocean (swimming, bodysurfing, boating) is always a joy. Being a workhand on a sailing rig... not so much. r

Heh.Heh I'm a landlubber, but still spent many, many days working on boats and drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Loved every minute of it for the most part. The captain's wife wasn't there, but there were a few females sent by the oil companies to do their business and liven things up.
