Here I am, it's me, Lord, to remind You once again
Of what a pure and selfless little Christian I have been.
I read my Bible every day and keep almost every rule.
I don't smoke or drink or curse, I teach kids in Sunday School.
I prayed with Sister Gertrude even though it was quite late,
And did you notice the amount I put in the offering plate?
Surely I'm Your favorite, and I deserve some special blessing,
For all the things I've done for You, and for all the fun I'm missing?
Does it fill You with disgust, or is it pity that You feel,
Do You roll Almighty Eyes and say to me, “Get real!”
When I parade my works before You as if I could somehow pay
For my own entrance into Heaven on that final judgement day?
My “filthy rags” can't cleanse me, that's why Jesus had to die.
It took the sacrifice of One so much holier than I
To wash away the sin only the Blood of Jesus can erase.
Your forgiveness can't be earned, it's only given by Your grace.
Forgive me, Lord, for acting as if You need my sorry “help”
When Your Word makes it plain I could never justify myself.
Thank You for not keeping score, because I'd never win
If I tried to do enough good things to balance out my sin.
Please help me to remember that any good that I might do
Is not what saves, it's just to show the world a piece of You.
Don't let me be a “good girl” to feed my smug, self-righteous pride
But let me serve You out of love, so You'll be glorified.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

I just met with a young friend in the grocery store today, and was so happy to have a mini-visit with her in the aisle there. It's always exciting to meet her because she shows the world a piece of the Lord, as you have said. In fact, I want to send her your poem...I'm sure she'll love it, too!
Hugs,
Connie
