TO A CELEBRATED HERO FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN

(i)

I see you, a fresh-faced boy
crowding into a tiny skiff at the dead of night,
juggling heavy kit and rifle to the jeers of mates:
“Off me lap, Jack – you ain’t me girlfriend!”

Did you know then the gratitude of a nation
was what hung in the air, lacing the stench
of sweat-soaked innocence with ideals
of foolhardy bravado and just cause?

That MY future comfort and ease
would be bought at the price of the fear
falling in curtains down your pack-bruised back,
the blood of comrades clotting beneath your
soul-scraping fingernails and tears of despair
washing your boots free of ignominy and madness?

(ii)

Sir, you do not know me, distanced in time and place
from the scenes of your victory and valour,
but I know you; I know you in the heart of your son
whose life is testimony to the hopes and visions
your brothers died to nurture and preserve.

His actions in a world still ill-at-ease with goodness
render your triumph complete; in him
is your standard a banner raised high
and those whom it shelters bask in your heritage.

(iii)

Your medals may gleam with a righteous pride;
your belt may still be buckled with nobility and courage.

But give me your boots, muddied and torn
for they have carried the burden of toil
and brought home the glory of a nation.

Leading Seaman John Turner, I am forever in your debt.
With untold thankfulness, I salute you.

Courage with a capital C. Sacrifice. War and peace. The British haven't shirked from the field of battle, and the country owes a huge debt of gratitude to the ordinary soldiers and sailors who have kept the defended these shores at key moments in history. Saying that, I hope we never see another World War.

I couldn't remember where I had seen the picture until I read the last few lines and remembered Andy's poem/picture. This is a beautiful, touching tribute to Andy's father... but also to all of those who fought so hard to grant us the liberties that we enjoy in this day and age.
I loved the poem...

I remember reading Andy's poem about his father, with this same pix. What an excellent gift to him and all those who have served-- sort of like "the tomb of the unknown sodier" monument in the US where specific people can honor an un-named soldier. This poem shows a gratitude from an un-named woman, to a specific soldier. I'll join you in your annonymity for this just cause. --Charlie

Excellent tribute Kate...so many have given of the life so we may be free, yet they are as we...human souls that carry their name and family within their hearts. To pay the ultimate price Seaman John Turner is etched within the Book of Life and has reached His Destiny among Angels and God...

We are as you say...

Indebted Forever to him...

Excellent work...

A just salute Kate, with wonderful, from the heart, sentiments of gratitude for those who fought the good fight and left their blood to stain the flags of freedom. We owe them all that we have and all that we are and I pray that we will never let the fruits of their labors fade away in apathy. Thank you for remembering and celebrating the life that he has given us. This is such a wonderful and well-executed offering!!
Take care,
Sherry

My Dear - I know sincerity and depth when I meet it.
As a war veteran, I am often sickened that our citizenry does not know or care about lives cut short in our killing war to make it safe for us to drive a car and buy at the super store.
Your poetry bucks that blindness, and in doing so, it reads magnificently in personal loving pride and thankfulness.
I am humbled by what you write, and filled with my own pride that you chose to do so. All who read this landmark poem will want to know the 'unknown' spirit. - Bill Broome
