Your first line mentions "bad leaders" which in the context DOES include even the Catholic Church's hierarchical upper echelons. It goes beyond saying that "leaders" have a moral responsibilty and duty towards those (in this case, a billion and a half) who look up to them, and hence the exemplary lives they ought to lead in order to keep the herd(s) from straying. Jimmy Carter is only echoing the silent "harmless" yearnings of countless individuals which, albeit, develops the imagination - highly recommended for poets, if you don't mind! No harm done for the idle mind!
Here, in reference to the 330,000 crimes committed by the Catholic clergy and their attendant lay-workers, since 1950, upon orphans, children and pre-teens, both the French State and the Vatican are colluding "complices" deserving of much "admiration", of course. The question is, Is the 330 thousand destroyed lives mendable by financial compensation? Man-made "gods" make more money than the Almighty!!!

"Envy cunning greed slander" is a great line, showing how bad leaders keep their power and position. Personally, the Roman Catholic tradition of abuse of young boys is hideous and not at all, Christian. However, consenting sex between adults never should be looked down upon regardless of the circumstances. It's only natural. It is only when sex is used as a power-play or abusive of anyone that it becomes unchristian and in need of punishment.
The idea that the priesthood is celibate is basically a myth. However, powerful forces have made it that way even though it isn't true.
