This is a poem taken from my collection The Black Widow, which is dark poetry and true crime based on domestic abuse and injustice. I was inspired to write it after the rise in domestic violence during Lockdown in people's homes, behind closed doors and drawn curtains. I am a home-bird myself and know how much humans and animals need a safe place to call home.
The swan’s nest of sticks –
Grebe’s floating platform –
Egret’s roost high on a ledge.
The wren’s soft lined cup –
Leaves, grass, mould
An entrance facing away
From cold winds.
The kingfisher’s narrow secret tunnel
The bald eagle’s durable playpen
Lined with feathers
Plucked from their breast.
The binding and waterproofing
from spiderwebs and lichens,
mud, saliva, caterpillar silk.
Structures of beauty
Ingenuity
Sacrifice
A wonderful romp through the houses of birds, meant to be rebuilt with love every year. Seeming so fragile, yet often very strong and still gentle for hatchlings when they arrive from their safe egg into the light of day and dark of night.
If only we humans could build such houses…

PS. Our birds in our suburban backyard are off their feed at our bird feeder because they are being harassed by city dwelling hawks.
Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
Perhaps "..Quiet Storm" will help rekindle old flames buried and long forgotten or express the love so deeply locked inside of your soul longing to be released.
Regardless of where you may be found in love this beautiful masterpiece can be
