Once Again

Thoughts that I'd no longer let you hurt me,
not allow you to insult or affect me,
Words like razors once again through me slice,
and I failed dismally in my own advice.

Your words like poisoned asps, spitting cold
your face contorted in anger uncontrolled,
thump ! upon the table remotes & books now fly,
your fist now raised, poised, but pointing at me... sly!

Verbal barrage of unrestrained abuse,
insults to the core that cut and bruise,
demeaning me once again as only you know how,
bitter cursing, words now worse than only "sow".

Perhaps it's that I no longer tow the line,
do things my way now, in my own time,
no longer do I jump at your beck and call,
nor do you have my back against the wall.

But still your words they slice so deep,
though I've learnt my mouth to shut and silent keep,
your threats of leaving now no longer scare me,
years... a lifetime I beg you, just to let me be !

I can relate perhaps not in the same sense
you suffer from, but in the ways we had
talked about once as far as positive thoughts
etc. But I do try and stay positive but
it just seems at times a person can only
take so much. Excellent piece Elga!

I had a marriage built the same as eileen.

Don't have erroneous thoughts. The only one to get hurt is oneself, even by their own way of thinking..

Elga, I took both physical and mental abuse for 16 years because I was raised to believe divorce was against God. Not only did I pay for it but my boys did too. They had deep scars for years. We take it because we ourselves feel guilty for something we may have done in life and think it is punishment. Or someimes we love so deeply until it turns to hate and violence, only when something tragic happens does it end. I left before the tragic, but not before the damage. I stayed way too long, I no longer regret it because the peace I have now is in the Lord who saved me from it all, and allows me to see the larger picture and the mistakes I make that contributes to all my wrong decisions in life. I hope and pray you will find the strength to end the cycle of abuse before it ends in tragedy. No matter what the circumstance, you will be better for it. Even if you had to live with less, or whatever. Take charge of your own life and free your spirit up to help you.

(thanks for your concern in comment, i'm fine;-)...Love Eileen

verbal abuse is intolerable ... when i was a young boy, my father would verbally abuse me because he inwardly blamed me for my mother's death ... i stood strong and let his insults just bounce off of me ... for i realized the problem was not with me but his own inner frustrations due to his inability to cope with life ... remain strong and he will see his words have no effect and are hollow ... perhaps he'll stop using them ...

you have expressed verbal abuse quite vividily and effectively in this poem ...

Verbal abuse is just as, and perhaps more, damaging than physical. Doing things your own way is a start, leaving if the abuse continues is the remedy. No woman has to continue to take this, most of us are more powerful and stronger than we realize. A powerful write Elga.

Elga,

Very sad but poignant write. One must always fend for who they are and what they believe in. There is no excuse for physical, verbal, or mental abuse.
