 You will never …

You will never have her back,
You killed that loving soul,
Too many times and all to often,
You stood and took control.

You tried and ran a tight ship,
Controlled as Captain thereof,
Insensitive to all her feelings,
And her pleadings as recalled.

Many a time she spoke to you,
Many more she even wrote to you,
Expressing things were changing,
Yet her pleas were all ignored.

Did she not ask to go for help,
To try and salvage what was left,
Do you remember your response,
You left her feeling so bereft.

How often did you compliment her,
On anything that she had done,
Was it not only upon “request,”
You reluctantly said “well done !”

Did she not work tirelessly?
To keep a happy home,
Clean, warm and welcoming,
From you, nothing but a groan !

Through your chosen blindness,
Too long you let it go,
Now when she eventually bolted,
You want her back; a puppet show?

It’s been so long, she can’t recall,
All that love she’d felt within her soul,
Years rushed by, you grew apart,
The tiny rift then, now beyond control!

You can’t have back, what once before,
The things you took for granted.
She had lacked the confidence then,
And never did you encourage her.

How often had she told you,
She wanted to grow old and be with you
In love, caring and holding hands,
And close in heart and soul.

Was she not always at your side,
Your most loyal and ardent supporter,
Do you remember when you were ill,
Who kept vigil over you?

Was your support ever returned,
When discovered she was quite ill,
Was it in your loving kindness,
Just to call her a lazy bitch!

Then do you remember the last cut she bore?
The dreaded "C" and loss of her "motherhood"
In your insensitive and  "voiced" opinion,
"Get things done"... you never understood!

The final blow to her dented soul,
Came in the form of a silent curse,
She’d exhausted herself, her body and mind,
Now, there’s no recourse.

How do you expect to have her respect,
When you just don’t show you care!

This poem has touched me deep. My freind Elga, your powerful muse has widowed your soul to us. It provoked my creativity but it has disturbed me too.

Was it not only upon “request,”
You reluctantly said “well done !”

Love and respect

So true Elga.
Once love has died, there is no way back, no possibility to make the past unhappen and go back far in time, when there was still love and caring.
At least my experience.
Excellent poem, as usual.

An absolutely powerful well-written painful write, done in pure heart-stopping poetry, Elga. It’s so very sad whenever this happens to another human being, because of one not being able to think beyond the moment. Bravo Poet.

Uh-oh... jangles so many bells that my ears are ringing here, Elga!! How many relationships, I wonder, rely upon an uneasy status quo being maintained because one partner is continually keeping the peace through a form of loving, self-denying yieldedness to the other? No matter how loving the "receiving" partner may be, the ugliness of one person controlling the other is always revealed in some shape or another in the end... exhaustion sets in and spirits and hearts are broken. I can only imagine that the situation is intolerably cruel if the persons concerned have not even love. You have eloquently touched upon one of the most painful and revealing aspects of the dynamics of the closest of personal relationships and the way in which they can operate. Sad but all too true. Thank you. Kate xx

it's a shame when a man doesn't realize the treasure of his life because of his own insecurities and shortcomings ...

I've seen quite a bit of this in my time. Some men are only able to relate to women as if they were objects and not people. And they don't care if they make it harder on us nice guys who are out there.

Elga...a masterpiece of revelation! Who knows how many
women in this world are treated this way?
Reminds me of the old country song where the guy is moaning
about all the things he asked his wife to do over the years,
and then it winds up: "Now sit down and tell me why you're
leaving me."
Some men are just too selfish and deserve what they get.
And then...there are others...

A very intense and powerful piece, Elga. The old saying that one does not know what they had - until it's gone - is truly applicable for many in matters of love.

Oh wow! Elga, this cuts right in and straight emotions well-expressed.

Some don't appreciate goodness from another and are very self-centred. You have done wonders with the choice of words in this piece.

BRAVA!!
