On a cold winter's night a small private plane took off from Clear Lake, Iowa bound for Fargo, N.D. It never made its destination.

When that plane crashed, it claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson and the pilot, Roger Peterson. Three of Rock and Roll's most promising performers were gone. As Don McLean wrote in his classic music parable,
American Pie, (annotated) it was "the day the music died."

..........................................................................

He changed the face of music forever

Brought rock and roll into fashion

Clean cut image and charismatic talent

      With spectacles and tousled hair

He showed how the Little Guy

Can become a Giant amongst men

He sang straight from his heart

       With dynamic movement and rhythm

       Electrifiying the audience

        With scintillating style

This Texas bred and born son

        Took the World by storm

        Buddy Holly and the Crickets

         With their distinctive unique sound

         Peggy Sue had us Bopping

That'll Be The Day we sang with joy

True Love Ways had us Swooning

As we Raved On through the Night

Cut short by the Hand Of Fate

         When just in his prime

         Angels smile down from Heaven

As Buddy gives his Trademark Smile

.............................................................................                   ................................." I've told the stars you're my only love

I want to love you to tenderly

Those same bright stars in heaven above

Know now how sweet sweethearts can be

Listen to me, hear what I say

Our hearts can be nearer each day

Hold me darling, listen closely to me "

Unlikely rock star, indeed. West Texas seems less likely to spawn a rocker tan Evis's Memphis. I wore glasses like that--identified my skinny self with him and had to wake up Little Donna at the drive in.

It's ironic that he died in the Land of the Byrds and Bob Dylan, spawning Prince and the Purple Rain.

P.S. They are gradually replacing the concrete with trees. The possum in my back yard this morning is a hopeful sign.

I have all of Buddy Holly's records in vinyl--->33 1/3 RPM--->keep looking for those retro stores which sell replacement stylus'--->The glasses made the man just as they made Roy Orbison and I am a Pretty Woman and I Rave On! Thanks for the memories, Peter. Rock 'n Roll Lives Forever!
