We often because of age and experiences are able to see the young make the same mistakes we made...

Bridges Burned

Oh be careful not to burn those bridges

Son, they’re what got you where you are today

Might just have to go back across them

You may not be able to find another way

The grass may seem a little tad greener

Then the old grass that grew at home

The trees may bear a different type of fruit

Son as you stand beneath them all alone

Now son you know we all make mistakes

Its just part of the human frailty

The trick is to learn from each and every one

To learn to accept love’s own reality

You know son I walked that ragged road myself

I’d say a time or two in years gone past

Took the turns and met with my own demons

That showed me my life was speeding by far too fast

Son I even learned to swim the raging rivers

Of the bridges I myself had burned behind

Wished like hell in that freezing water

That I had not have been so very blind

Well son I will say goodbye and leave you now

Looks like my bridge runs East and yours goes West

I see a shady spot over yonder by the river

That may be a place for these old bones to rest.

I swore I'd never burn a bridge, but I did last year. About a month ago I had to rebuild it, pretty humbling, but such a good feeling. I've tried to convey to young people, make your own mistakes, but please don't make the same mistakes that I made ... and here's why. Sometimes they heed the advice, sometimes not - just like me.

A wonderful penned poem, smiling while reading, we are reminded of all those mistakes we've made and watch our children making so many of their own, often the same that we came to regret. Life indeed is speeding away too fast.

I love it, Fee! I put up with a lot from my son and daughter so the the bridges are still there. But they are really tough to keep them up. They need constant upkeep. Mom's a bridge mender!!!
Whew! lot of work!

If only our children could heed this advice, but, they too must make their own mistakes and learn from them, in their own way. Great write Fee.

I tended to burn mine too, and didn't have a poet like you to pass on this good advice to his son. I like this, but some bridges you've got to burn (no choice) You write good stuff.

The older one get the more the smarter their parents are.
Oriental cultures have known this all along, why are we so slow to catch on?

So many bridges, so many flames, so many ashes.
Man can't reconstruct those bridges with its ashes, as past mistakes are just minutia of life to make understand that we don't know it all.
Great write!

This work should be given to all halls of education for young people to read and absorb. I especially love the "shady spot over yonder". The old bones may want to rest, but, the wisdom of the elders is always the best because its source is love and caring.
My best

Fee,
I feel your letting go, and that is what you must do. Your son needs to find his way on his journey to his destiny. Yes we always want to help ease our children's burdens, but you know it is all those burdens that has made us such wonderful people now!
You are a good man and wonderful father, just let go and see what happens..you will be surprised.
Peace, Love, and Light,

Felix this is beautiful, only if others would read and heed the info given. I must make sure that my son Bill reads this. Nice to see that we can see past the bridge and the green grass that looks just fine. Thank you for sharing.
