To my mother, who never really got to see any of my work before she passed on to a better place...

Poem Artwork

The Girl From the Humber Road

By: her son

She was but a teenager in Newfoundland

Teaching school and living at home

In a small house on the Humber Rd

She had no desire to ever roam

Her sister had a pen pal once

A soldier boy from Prince Edward Island

But her sister had a boyfriend

Who she knew wouldn’t quite understand

When Private Perry got posted to Newfoundland

Before he was shipped overseas to war

It was Edna met him at the train station

And she knew she wanted him for evermore

They were married in a quiet service

In his Khaki uniform he proudly stood

She was 5’8” and he was 5’4”

So jokingly on a wooden block he stood

Tears and letters were their marriage

For the four long years in trenches as he fought

Back home little Peggy was a walking, talking doll

And his dna’s arms were all he soug

They raised nine kids and loved them all

Standing bside by side till the angels took them away

She was my mother and I’ll always miss her

Until my own time comes on Judgement day

PRECIOUS!!! What a true love-story this was, the stuff of movies, Felix. They were so lucky to have survived their war-torn romance to raise 9 beautiful children. I feel such a wuzz by comparison. But your mother's spirit is in you... she looks full of life and verve... bit cheeky, too! :)) But then, MY mother was also called Edna, so perhaps I'm just biased. And yes... though not seeing anything of what we write, they DO know of it, I'm sure. Funnily enough, a poem of mine which is being quite successful "out there in the world" is about my mother's death. It contains my heart and soul. Like this poem, work that contains the essence of us shines and endures, perhaps. She will live forever because your work does. Bless you, Darlin, K xx

Dear cuz, your mother, my aunt would be and is so proud of you today. She would be especially proud of the tribute you have paid her here on the den. She certainly raised a very talented and creative son with so much love in his heart towards his family and friends. She was truly blessed as well.

Love you cuz,
Selena

Remembering your mother in a poem is a better tribute than any gift of flowers, because we can hear the words she becomes a little part of us too.
