Rose's poem this morning and a recent visit to see my Mother in law in the seniors home and to hear how few of her family visited her triggered this...

My Last Christmas Visit

By: Santa Fee

I made one last Christmas visit

To a place of forgotten love

A place where mothers and fathers gather

Till they are called home up above

I put my arms around a dear one

Who smiled just to hold my hand

How she could be so deserted by her family

I just couldn’t understand

Yes, age may have robbed her dignity

And she cuddles in her arms a stuffed toy

Yet she is still the mother who was there for you

Who raised you from a little girl or boy

You know she talks about you often

How she had eight babies of her own

She now lives in those forgotten memories

because you leave her there alone

I will not judge you for forsaking her this way

For there is a higher power who’s sure to have his say

The truth is we all age and need somebody

And you too will someday have to face that day…

How very true Fee. So many lovely people sit and wait for someone to talk to and share their memories with them.

Waht a poem, the BEST I've read (where elders are concerned)
Sweetie, you touched my heart deeply!
This is a Keeper too!
Thank you for writing this SWEET FEE, and it's so very (sad) but True, I know when I visitied my Grandma at her assisted home (with close units) It was sad to hear the stories... and of the aloneness in their eyes/soul/etc. The only thing I could do was listen, but for a few I dug their gardens and planted the plants they wanted! I loved doing it and seeing their smiles... One lady, I put my potting soil in my trunk, and the shovel/etc. and surprised her BEFORE I knocked on her door in the morning...we had breakfast, I will never forget it! I may write about it... Thank you for the spark! "Again, it's been awhile, my fault not reading in your site like I use and WILL AGAIN! PROMISE!
Things NEED to CHANGE!
I'm so glad you wrote this poem! YOur easy flow I have come to know, and love!
YOur heart is sublime!

I can so relate to this poem. I spent many long hours with my beloved aunt in the assisted living home before she passed. You've offered an excellent word of warning in this fine piece. Your friend, Kathy

Fee,
I'm always amazed by those who don't appreciate a parent who took good care of them. Hugs,

Beautiful, endearing expressions unfortunately very true. So many spend the last of their lives in Nursing Homes and for whatever reason become forgotten, except for a few memories.....

Be always safe,
Karen

So very true Felix as I have come to love this lady as my own Mother and looked forward to my visits to see her. Shame on those who have forgotten her and her love for they will answer one day. Who will hold them as they cry their tears. Thank you Cuz for sharing.

You're right. I was "lucky" my mother was in a nursing home for only about 3-4 months. She was not deserted. But I saw others who were. Who had outlived their children. Sad. They loved my smiles and hellos. Liz

"Other cultures venerate their elders, why not North America?" -- Great question from Karla. I have lived in Japan, Vietnam, China, Philippines, Guam, and Mexico. Old people are cherished family/village members in those cultures, cared for and loved to the end (and sometimes beyond). Perhaps, in our prideful thrust for individuation, we have created something monstrous here in North America.

I love that photo, Fee. She looks so tiny and fragile and sweet :-)

Fee,
Amazing write, I worked in a nursing home for many years, I know firsthand what you have written about. I vowed never to put my parents in a nursing home, I never had to make that decision since Mama died at 39 by a hit run driver, and Daddy died a few years after that. I've seen some patients with loving children who come and help with their Mom or Dad, but some poor souls had no one, they were just empty shells sitting in the halls. So sad, Fee. The end of a persons life should be much more than that.

Huggggs,
~Linda

So true, Fee; excellent message in this! So sad when we forget our elderly parents, or elderly people in general; they deserve to be treated far better than this! Heartrending write!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

Visited the Seniors Home around here, a few were glad of the big cake with frosting and star-candles and the time talking, telling, smiling, forgetting that some of them didn't have a visit from the family, again, but happy that extrangers took the time.
