My brother and I are both disabled. This is how I feel some people look at us...sometimes.

Poem Artwork

I’ am Disabled

You turn away from me as though I am a monster

I can touch, taste, speak…feel

I have emotions just as you do…I can laugh, cry and even get angry

Then you do not know…you have never taken the time

Why is it I frighten you so

I may speak slower than you

I may walk much slower than you

Yet I am quite responsive…am I not?

Still I frighten you

I am not contagious

I have no virus that made me this way…no parasite

Try to look…look hard

I am a human being

I have my thoughts my hopes and yes I even have dreams

These to can be shattered, just as yours can

My heart can get broken…just as yours can

I am not a freak, though you still look at me as though I am

Look again…Harder this time

Yes…my body may be damaged, yet I am still alive I still breathe the air

I am one of many in this world of ours we are all around you

We were handed a raw deal

Lucky you

I have my pride and I must say I wear it well

I AM DISABLED

Last I heard we were all of God’s special children

Jade,

Powerfully written, you have opened many eyes today. Thank you for speaking your mind. As a disabled person myself, you have said what I've wanted to say movingly and eloquently.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Stuff 'em. They're disabled in the mind.
Working, well playing with handicap kids I learnt life is fun and only true friendship counts.
My mother is half paralysed.. Yet she takes so much joy out of life and her 16 grand kids too.

love the poem and its impact on the reader. I will never understand the treatment people give others when others are different. Thank you for this beautiful sharing. BTW I love the saying on your brothers shirt. Thanks for the smile.
