...and the five muskrat lodges the French drained and burned in the French and Indian assaults, trying to sweep the red race from their hunting grounds, fighting over hide territory, a curse of the fur trade.
Joe Cloud takes good measure into the forest with a measuring stick he made from a yard of willow branch he took from one of the five muskrat lodges just before the conflict had come full circle. One day in the forest he pointed to the full length of the stick and said, "This is how much life you have left, Daughter." Then he indicated one inch and said, "I have only this much left. I know you will carry on."
"How do you know this, father?" Fringe Water Many Bosom asks. "How do you know that I will not drown in the river where otter and beaver wrestle muskrat?"
"I had a vision while on the river coming home from the Great Lakes fur trade. In this vision, you collected many loon feathers in my slumber. White loon will teach you how to be a good swimmer. You will meet a husband and he will keep you safe from the enemy," Joe Cloud says. "A good father knows this of his daughter."

The passage of energy and creativity is a gift from a father to his siblings. So much of this is the way of my father. This one is special for me Sage.
Thank you!

Interesting story, Sage. I would have to read much more to get its full meaning.

Whoa! An excerpt from "The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler." Gotta love it, and so I do. Joe's Cloud (sorry, couldn't hept myself) is growning heavy with life and is ready to expire. Joe knows this and is passing on the fruits of his labors and his intellect to his next of kin, his daughter, knowing that she will doo the righ thing, because, after all, she IS Joe Cloud's daughter, how could she do otherwise?
You have such a deep well of Native lore to draw from, Sage, and it's fascinating, the voices of the past coming thru your poems. Pity the french were so ruthless, but they got defeated in their turn, and the furry animals, well, they never win, do they?

The drug called "The Shari" has been used for vision quests over many years. But, when all the rivers start drying up, the tribe must send a young hunter named Tomás on a much more important trip through the Amazon.
