Humor in Uniform, another true story! Our Flight Commander was Sergeant Holden and our Flight was #1756. We were in Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in Basic Training.

Poem Artwork

Our Flight commander marched us back from the field.

He knocked on our sister squadron's barracks door and said:

"Open up this door, this is your flight commander I say"

There was no response...So he yelled...

"Open up this door and I mean open it up right away!"

So the lowly airman belched out with a stutter and shuttered,

"Sir, sir, please excuse me, sir, sir you're not authorized on this list I see."

So the flight commander yelled out so loud it shook the trees!

"Airman Spears, open up this door!"

"Airman, Spears, I am not going to say this anymore!"

Still the lowly airman belched out and studded and shuttered,

"Sir, sir, please excuse me, sir, sir you're not authorized on this list I see."

By this time the other men in the flight were amused, some chuckled,

Others wondered what was happening and some seemed confused.

So the Flight Commander tipped his hat and smiled at his troops.

He yelled out again this time it was so loud he could shake a goose!

"My troops and I feel it's an honor to have you in our command.

You are doing such a fine job Airman, so let me shake your hand."

So Airman Spears smiled big and opened the door big and wide.

He messed up and the Flight Commander wanted a piece of his hide!

"Airman Spears, you took My security test today and you just failed!!!

"Airman Spears see me in my office; you’re going straight to jail!!"

Well after that faithful day Airman Spears was given a second chance.

When marching our Flight Commander would yell, "Airman Spears, what's that, a dance?"

LOL

In the end, Airman Spears graduated right along with the rest of the men.

We are still buddies after more than 40 years, God Bless You, my old friend!

Strange how guys go into basic clueless and come out heroes.

Sure glad he didn't shake that goose loose! Nothing worse than a loose goose.

You brought me some great old memories, my friend. I did my Basic at Lackland AFB as well. You even made me remember how damned hot it was down there.

LOL!!! I used to go to my brothers' field marches and watch them on their usual "runs" or whatever those are called. I had one Navy, one Air Force, and one Army. I can just hear "Airman spears, what's that, a dance?" Did they all repeat it in time to their march? LOL!!!! I love it!!

Love ya!
