I am very interested to find out the opinion of pet advocates about the idea of renting a pet. It certainly sounds innovative but will it work? I am not sure...

I came across an interesting article today

It says that walking a dog will help keep the doctor away

This may be a way to better health, especially for those over 65

Well, anything is GREAT if it can add more healthy years to our lives

The article suggest that not everyone is able to care for a pet every day.

So one solution is to, “Rent a Pet” it’s different, but this may be a solution to better way…

Hah! I'm a dog walker big time, well twice a day, sometimes more. Although Mr. Ed and I have had our problems, I agree with him about the tug of war which the poor dog would feel with the constant taking it out and bringing him back.

Pets in shelters are already traumatized and heartbroken because they have been abandoned by their families. I personally don't think that 'renting them out' to people is a good idea. When any pet is taken out of a shelter, they believe they are leaving for good. I think it would be extremely cruel to constantly take them out and then bring them back to the shelter so people can get some exercise.
We rent cars and bikes and machines; a pet is a living being, with feelings.

Why not adopt a pet? I say that is because pets are not objects, they have feelings like humans. Renting them out to different people everyday may not be good for the pet's mental state. It's like a young child being shifted from foster home to foster home. I'm not sure if this is a great idea. I only have one pet, my cat,"Big Boy Pride" is like our son. He thinks he is human too, and he thinks he is our child. He knows our home is his "permanent" home.

Seniors can walk either with, or without a pet.

My dogs are my world and I understand what you mean. Pets give us love unconditionally but sometimes we cannot care for them due to illness. They are angels with paws. To rent I'm not sure about that. There's somethings in this life we cannot put a price tag on. God places them in our path when we least expect it. Whether it be a bird, cat, dog or goldfish, love is granted in many forms. No price tag attached. Pets are forever.

Hey! I'm in my mid sixties and I'm still waitressing. I feel great! I think I'll die with tray in my hand!

Love ya!

Of course for most of us - our pets ARE forever. However, if you read this article carefully you will see that there are some benefits for the pet and the senior citizen. They both get exercise and interaction with one another. Then the institution benefits to help pay for the care of the pets. To do otherwise the pets would spend more time in a cage and the senior citizen would spend less time walking and exercising . Additionally, this may lead to a bonding of the two whereby adoption becomes an option. I know if it were me and I enjoyed the pet I would do everything I could to adopt. Amen...

The only pets you can ever rent belong to your friends.
Pets are forever.
