Brain Scrub...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

The way it’s been lately… When the flow feels blocked, and I start deleting more than 70% of what I’ve been writing, it’s time for an honest brain scrub to evaluate, and hopefully remove, what’s causing expression to feel more frustrating than fruitful….

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Poem Artwork
In an effort to improve
I began weighing options.
Behind me - what I’d been,
In front of me – what I wasn’t,
And all around – the stench
Of Byzantine intrigues….
.
Not knowing what to do,
I began mulling old mistakes,
Abstracted kinships, and a vast
Repository of failures adorning
My brain like wilting Sargasso
.
Not much felt right lately…
The search for wisdom,
Faux friendships,
A family torn apart,
So much mental trash,
Struggles and aspirations,
Admirers who’d become obstacles,
Misunderstandings, off-key impressions,
Being intellectual instead of honest,
The inability (at times) to be civil,
(Because brooding
Felt better)
Idiotic struggles worsened
By creative self-centeredness
Defense mechanisms worsened
By disparagers railing and gossiping,
The graveyard of all past good intentions
Made worse in the smirks of all those exalted
‘Know-it-all’s’ whispering: ‘I told you so’…
.
It was April, 2018, a
Time to honestly reassess
The marrow of my motivations,
And all the baggage I’d amassed;
Alliances without meaningfulness,
Casting good seed upon rocks,
Goals that served no purpose,
The perplexities of sharing
(And being understood),
Humanity’s vainness,
The stench of
Religious patronizing, and…
Keeping at bay the knuckleheads who
Attempt to snarf the soul of an honest man’s
Dreams (with all bizarrely implemented dramas) …
.
Standing in my own cross-hairs –
Weighing these things –
I reasoned it was far better to
Press forward forgiving and forgetting,
Than to look back questioning and brooding about
All the things that still (at times) clawed at my brain…
.
So now it begins…

PHILIPPIANS 4:13 CAPS IT OFF FOR ME, EXACTLY. CLEAR ALL THE DISARRAY OUT AND PRESSING ON IN THE STRENGTH OF 'HIM' WHO IS YOUR SOURCE, YOU 'KNOW' YOU 'CAN'...BEGIN. BUT REMEMBER, ISA 40:31. WE'VE ALL BEEN THERE BUT WE USE DIFFERENT...SCRUBS. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I know the feeling of trying to write while thoughts swirl around in my brain. I find it best to focus on the subject at hand and clear my mind of all else. Easier said than done.

'so now it begins...' is a sign of a positive startup, as it is always at the very beginning of things. it means that a job has been done and that's the most important. Actually, your phrases building up and wordsmithing are fully available only for you, as you feel it in your own way of a poet and individual; and this is the most beautiful part of your masterpiece. Bravo. Cheers, alex

Wow! That was quite a confession of your challenges and doubts. From what I read, I guess the best thing is to "scrub them from your mind," forgive and forget, and move on… Forward.

Rich, this is the first one I think that I didn't have to "look up" a word on and I actually understand where you are coming from though fortunately I guess I have not got to the point where you are with this...and I enjoyed reading and re-reading it...:) -e-

Wow!

It has been a long time since I've read your work and it's like picking up where I left off.

Your poem, like previous work, is dark, intense, full of honesty and damn good.

Cheers,
Dan

I posted a poem recently entitled "Forgiveness" dealing with the issue of forgiving oneself. This is a remarkable reflection and self-examination with a forward thinking, positive ending. May you prosper and grow in all your future endeavors. Salaam. Peace.

Often Richard, nothing feels better then a clean slate. We amass so much debris in our brain as we age. Clearing it through honest personal scrutiny is something very valuable to the soul. I love the way you ended it. "So now it begins" if we should be so lucky as to live each day this way, sigh, the European worry bee in me gets in with a buzz, at times I'd do well to take your advise. Thank you for the gentle reminder, have a wonderful day,

Oh, do I know the feeling. Much of my 1800 poems and novels have gone through the processing you cite here, causing me as well to brain scrub. I've also found as a consolation, reworking old poems or taking the the premise of an old poem and finding a different take on it has proven to provide a relatively safe haven while I continue jotting down words, phrases, even collecting images, that have become poems at a later date. I would guess just the writing of this piece has loosened the log jam for you. Good luck.

Good luck with the cleansing, but don't do too good a job. The grim and grime sprout fields of gorgeous blooms ... be well.
