Just a thought I had on the spur of the moment. For all you souls out there to contemplate.

Circus of Souls

A circus of souls rode out one day,

rode out not to work, not to play.

They rode towards the sun in their eyes,

blinding them to the truth and the lies.

Eventually, they came to the land of despair,

thought they would take refuge and linger there.

But there was no food nor water to drink,

this place called despair into to sink.

So they left despair on walking feet,

seeking out justice and not defeat.

They came to the land of milk and honey,

squandered it all for the love of money.

They eventually settled in a state of ennui,

where all was bland and full of hooey.

In spite of all this, the circus carried on,

as the souls caroused from dusk to dawn.

"Eat, drink and be merry... for tomorrow we die." Your poem captures a common trait of mankind.

Circus of souls Ron, under the Big Top suffering from tedium. Reminiscent of some days with too little to do. Never thought of us as circus souls but I suppose you could say we are as we fit many of the prerequisites. Interesting poem and perspective. Write on.

This is quite a carousel of emotions from despair, through the land of milk and money and finally arriving at ennui. Sounds like a typical day for most of us, what with the ups and downs of life. And yes, as you say "the circus carried on." John

Reading into your poem, the thrills of life's circus are short-lived if we have a propensity for boredom and a tendency to squander.

As always, your poems leave much to ponder.

Always loved the circus when it came to town. Even in the big city, the Circus always found its home.

Ennui is French for boredom.
but that can't be applies to dear Ron

alright Ron, this ole Arkansas boy has looked up the work "innui" and I don't even understand the definition of innui, that is a new one on me for sure! But I think I get the jist of it from the context of your poem. Words are understood by context anyway, sometimes even if you really don't know the word, right?
And I thought I was "edchumecated", ha!

The little poem served up a truthful point, Ron.
