A lot of poetry is driven by fear. Perhaps the greatest poet of this genre was Edgar Allan Poe. But another paralyzed guy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, knew fear's source, better than most.

About Fear Resulting from the Great Depression

Fear

Fear creeps in like a sneaky cold draft.
When was the last time you laughed?

Fear creeps in and steals your resolve,
takes over your mind as thoughts revolve.
Knows not good reason, but only hate.
Throw up walls and lock the gate.

Fear the poor, ugly, weak and unwashed,
leave them struggling to their fate.
Don't let them into our country,
our intelligence to denigrate.

Gird yourself for the apocalypse,
it's coming--sooner or late.
It's been prophesied for so long now,
it's time to open heaven's gate.

Fear the latest disease reported near,
for you are sure to be the one to get it,
if not this one, then the one next year.
Immunizations cause it, it's very clear.

Fear your next infirmity, coming down the pike.
You lived your life like it was boundless,
abusing your body with whatever you like.
Pain is now coming; a driven home spike.

Fear all the conspiracies and rumors.
They certainly will come true for you.
As sure as the moon is made of cheese,
and Bigfoot is coming after you, too.

Most of all, you fear your soon coming death,
because it spiritually is so damned confusing.
Grasping for straws of hope somehow beyond,
a hope that you can't win for trying, but losing.

Ask yourself. Do I react irrationally to fear?

Viva the Poet!

Happy International Poetry Day!

"Fear" packs up all the psychoanalytical concepts in healing emotions by using maieutical voice to pass its message.

A poem built with art, history and science from which I have learned.

Much gratitude to the author of "Fear".

In reverent appreciation,

Andre Emmanuel Bendavi ben-YEHU

I LOVE THE LAST LINE BECAUSE, IN REALITY, WE ALL AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER FEAR SOMETHING. BUT IT IS OUR 'RESPONSE' TO OUR FEAR...RATIONAL OR IRRATIONAL...THAT DETERMINES THE RESULTS OF IT. FEELINGS OF FEAR CAN BE NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE. MANY INDIVIDUALS HAVE COME THROUGH 100% IN A FEARFUL SITUATION...OTHERS HAVE CRUMBLED. ENJOYED AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Between my parents and grandparents I heard all of the FDR / Great Depression / New Deal stories....As for fear....Some people play on it to purposely scare others into submission in order to get their way....Well enough of that....Let's go searching for rainbows....Which reminds....I have this urge to write something..... :-)

And what's worse than irrational fear? It's having leaders who stoke the fire and fan the flames of fear for their own power and profit.
A right on write.

You have touched upon all the bases of our most poignant fears, including fear itself. It seems to be part of our DNA, part of the "human condition", and as you aptly point out, fear of the unknown that we try to rationalize into a tiny corner of our minds.

FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. Our nation is struggling with fear today. We teach our children algebra which 95% of us never use but we don't teach them how to love their neighbor or how to enjoy life and play. We don't need more guns or arming each other to the teeth. That will just provoke more fear. We need to teach all children more love and respect for authority so they will hopefully obey the rules that are already in place. We need to teach our teachers to become aware of the student's behaviors that are abnormal and to seek help for these kids so they can vent out their frustrations. Teach love so hate and fear may die. We don't need more walls, we need to teach how to live better lives wherever we may belong. Am I making sense, or am I completely wrong?

Frozen in fear, lost in greed, we fall further and further from our country's soul. How refreshing it is to read poetry that reminds us all we must continue to resist falling prey to the loss it causes us to feel. Your poetry is a beacon, Ron.

Fear is hardwired into us, but we still have choices as your poem suggests. Some of us choose to see fear as paradoxical with courage. Others try to ignore it, but fear is tenacious and without a positive belief to the negative fear, we do succumb. I've always tried to adhere to the maxim: everything is perfect.

We fear something, Ron. Many, if not all, fear is the result of an inner feeling of self-inflecting scabs to cover our own ineptitude. Fear. We love "scary movies, novels, etc. Fear. Without it could we rid ourselves of the one thing we all have . . . Fear?

Good poem about Fear -- that most basic of human emotions -- with a bit of wit and empathy.
