                Broken with time.........

Skies slowly darken as clouds move in,
whirling, circling bringing rain to the shore.
A woman stands, broken with time,
each night searching, hoping evermore.

              Broken with time.....

Sixty five years pass one day at a time,
keeping her torch faithfully lit, unsure.
Winds pick up speed, waves white crest,
smacking rocky cliffs with a thunderous roar.

              Broken with time.....

Rain begins to fall as tears gently flow,
remembering a day long, long ago elapsed.
Promises made, young dreams crushed,
as reality once again is collapsed.

              Broken with time.....

Faint smell of salt fills her lungs,
while her heart remains still in utter despair.
Oh the agony, the heartbreak of it all,
yet not a single sound does she share.

              Broken with time....

A Clipper ship all shiny and new,
sets sail with men filled with hopes high.
The further from port, the smaller she became,
until mysteriously blending in with the sky.

               Broken with time.....

In all these years, a family grown,
yet to the cliffs a promise keeping.
Night after lonely night keeping vigil,
alone, now fragile, always weeping.

               Broken with time.....

Vows made, vows shattered, eyes dimming steadily,
one special day, a turning point, never to rhyme.
Life goes on and so it has,
except for this one very special moment in time.

               Broken with time....

Skies slowly darken as clouds move in,
whirling, circling, bringing rain to the shore.
A woman stands, broken with time,
each night searching, hoping evermore.

Karen wonderful title filled with what seems like glints of hope and yet despair. Excellent imagery through the entirity of the poem all the interjections worked so well together.

This brought back thoughts of the widow walks on old New England coast homes where sailor's wive searched for site of their husband's ships returning to port. Many a widow came to know her fate on such walks. They too walked the nights long after the ships were declared lost. some spent the rest of their lives on the widow walk pondering what might have been.

well done, Karen,

The repeated refrain brings depth to this poem.
"Sixty five years pass one day at a time." That line really resonated with me.

This was a very thoughtful and wonderful poem.

Reads like a love song to rival anything that even the best country artists could offer. It has it all, love, loss, the sea and the sails, and it is wrapped in such a bittersweet veil of hopelessness. I agree with other reviewers...this is definately one of your best writes to date Karen...perfect.

Sorry, I don't see the sadness here, only a beatific inner reflection, a peaceful one at a time second by second until those sand grains of time where together at the bottom of an hour glass telling the reader of sixty five years of up and down, of tears and smiles, and the realization that life always will be...broken with time not with a sense of lost, but with the tenderness of have lived.

Hello Karen,

This is so sad, Karen, it also reminds me of my mother and her devotion to my father, always waiting for him to return to her, but he never did, until she lost her memory from stroke. She's not heartbroken anymore.

Great poem and perfect write.

This is great Karen. I can picture a broken hearted girl/woman standing on a "widow's walk" atop a house facing the sea waiting for her loved one to return. Not sure if this is what you had in mind here, but having grown up on the ocean this is what I picture in this poem. Either way, you have done a great job with this piece.
