        Discolored and torn......

A silent hush, not even a stray breeze,
an empty room, yet memories abound.
Children's laughter once permeated,
pulling up a chair not hearing a sound.

A broken window off in the distance,
shards of glass spread all over the floor.
Dust and cobwebs distort the dulled light,
what once was rich, now remains poor.

Reaching for a blanket that once was new,
dirty and tattered, discolored and torn.
Wrapping it around from shoulder to shoulder,
it carries a strange scent, lonely and forlorn.

Listening to the surf beating against the rocks,
at the bottom of the cliff, relentless and steady.
Many others have stood by this window,
staring out, patiently, waiting and ready.

An eerie uneasiness, an overwhelming feeling,
encompasses every pore, as never before.
Another is here, though not to be seen,
an essence, a strangeness, a spirit of yore.

An overpowering presence trying to reach out,
bridging what was with what is today.
Sound of music, sad, muted and soft,
rusted music box, a waltz it does play.

Standing to dance, a gentle spirit appears,
as intoxicating sounds play havoc with emotion.
The warmth of love filling this old room,
is one of everlasting devotion.

Two warmly embrace as they glide along,
tantalizing music plays, shattering any defeat.
The warmth and love shared in this room,
will throughout eternity continue to repeat.

As morning approaches it is time to depart,
carefully place the worn blanket on the floor.
With falling tears, leaving memories behind,
beginning a new day, while closing the door.

This one made me feel sad and the feeling begins with the title.
The atmosphere is very well described, with presence felt beyond physical reality.

Karen.. you have another sense.. the essense of true love expressed in words.. you pulled me into a dimension of all senses.. the shards of broken reality once so whole.. a cathedral of stained glass arranged in your heart.. for all to see.. the tears I feel upon my cheek are not bitter.. your eloquence and insight makes them sweet..

This was beautifully written, bringing to life imagery of a vacant room that once was the stage of the best moments, sweet memories, and it is sad to see how time could leave the past so discolored and torn. But still we must go on.

Hi Karen,

This is a poem that makes me think of the memories left behind as time passes. My father's mother died when he was seven-years-old. When I was about that age, I remember him taking us to see the foundation of an old house where he had lived happy memories with his mother and a complete family. I remember looking around to see if I could find something of his past there, like a broken toy or something.

Now my father and mother are gone, too. However, the memories of them live on until I'm gone, too.

Old rooms and homes have lots of memories within them.

Wonderful poem.

The picture and the haunting quality of your words with such wonderful descriptives take us into that room with you. I have been in places like this in my life where for whatever reason things were just left behind and forgotten and it does feel like the spirits of the owners of the rooms, items, etc are still there and need the comfort of knowing some one has not forgotten them. This is one of your very best Karen and Robert's picture is the perfect compliment for it...I do hope you submit this one for publication,
