The Lakota knew the place as 'make sica'
Early French trappers called the area
les mauvailses terres ā traverser.
Both mean "bad lands."
A landscape of dirt and rock
With a few silent forlorn trees
Nothing to break the dreariness
Stretching out as far as you can see
Gray brown and mottled darkness
A wasteland without color of life
In a world that is over populated
Many of these barren lands exist
Some in areas too desolate to cultivate
Others say it is inhabited by aliens
Beings that are demonic spirits
Discouraging any form of construction
Others have become National Parks
The Badlands reveal themselves to you
With emptiness, yet if you study them
The plains are full of traces of ancient life
You will also see eagles soaring on the hunt
Wings outstretched over grassland that
Goes on forever, and above all, you will
Experience the near absence of human noise

"I was totally unprepared for the revelation called the Dakota Bad Lands...What I saw gave me an indescribable sense of mysterious elsewhere - a distant architecture, ethereal..., and endless supernatural world more spiritual than earth but created out of it." Frank Lloyd Wright-1935

You could imagine indians living there once....
Well I didn't see any aliens trekking there, i was the alien, but I did go up the road to see devils tower too, never got a close encounter there either..lol
Indeed, they are quite foreboding in a majestic way. I remember there was a villiage there with a massive store, i bought a few paintings there...

The wind blows sideways so unbelievably bad and you're toast if stuck the middle of January in a snow storm.
Great job!

In my view, our entire planet is a good land, but some places are better than the others. Some are like hurdles, for a reason. But every poem is nice as it gives us some insight about the past. Good write, emile
Informative and educational, I learned something new. The Badlads don't sound that bad, after all. :) Well done!
