I hear them already,
The raucous sounds
Of lawnmowers
Going back and forth
Across patches of ground
That have been
Greening up
With spring's warmth
And rains,
And the scents
Of newly mown grass
And wild onions
Are like perfume
To my winter-starved senses.
The Bradford pears next door
Are white with blossoms
And the willow tree that stands
At the foot
Of our sloping yard
Sports tiny green leaves
Along its many whip-like limbs,
Limbs that will soon house
Nests for a variety of birds
Raising their clutches of young.
Meanwhile, at its feet,
Two tulips,
One red, one purple,
Bloom in defiance
Of the lawnmower,
And of the shade to come.
"Gentlemen, start your mowers!" Ahhhh, ain't nothin' sweeter than the smell of the first grass cutting! And ain't nothin' more annoyin' than the start of allergy season! *achooooo* *snif* LOL Love this one, Rebecca; well done!

Oh lawnmowers! green all over, sweating people pushing, mad people trying to start pulling a string, people driving that mimicking Formula One wannabes, while my self on the veranda of my top third floor bless mah-self having not forced to collect sixteen tons of grass!
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
