The mountains are clear
Beneath sparkling azure skies
And puffy white clouds,
Most uncommon for July
When the blue-gray "smoke"
For which they are named
Normally hangs like
A humid shroud;
Cool nights
And temperate days
Are a joy for those
Who work and play
During the soujourn of
The summer dog star;
Soon, summer will return
And chase off this taste of fall,
But for now we will enjoy
The respite.
"...clouds blue gray smoke..." are the messages from the mountains to Great Spirit Manitou above, thanking Him for summer rains and the new born deer and buffalo on the prairie.
