Welcoming party
Each time I return
From outside,
It doesn't matter
If I've been gone
A minute
Or several hours
They hurry
To greet me
With eyes bright
And tails wagging,
And with that
The stress of the day
Melts away
As I bend
To pat heads
And scratch ears,
My heart lifting
As I soak in
Their unique brand
Of uncomplicated,
Unconditional
Love.
For to them,
It does not matter
The sins I've committed
Or the weakness
Of my nature,
Their's is
The kind of forgiveness
We humans pray to emulate,
A gentle, tender regard
That shines
From eyes soft
With trust
And innocent acceptance
Of all my human strengths
And failings.
They are my closest friends,
My most trusted confidants,
And my most cherished blessings.
They are my pets,
And for the short time
I am allowed
To share my life with them
I am ever reminded
Of how fortunate
I am
That I was chosen
To love them in return.
