What you wrote gave me a lot to think about. Much of what happens is serendipity. When we are thrust into situations that require courage, whether in war or in avoiding war, how we deal with it determines whether we are a hero or a coward.
It was 1965, because of my draft designation changed from S1 to 1Y because of my paralysis, I couldn't even enlist and become the jet pilot. My highest interest according to the Strong Interest Blank, a lifelong measure of psychological interest. At least two of my college classmates were commissioned and flew. One, from my hometown, was a Marine pilot who went MIA over North Vietnam, Lieut. Paul Derby.
I had a girlfriend and we were at a church retreat. She made this statement that stays with me. "All of my boyfriends are conscientious objectors." I found it difficult to put myself in that category. She left me within 6 months for an artist and instructor… A conscientious objector?
