We all have wishes-
Some for riches,
Some for fortune
And glory,
Some just for
Peace of mind,
And I am no different
From any of you.
But from among
All my wishes
Is one that will never
Be granted.
From childhood
I struggled unsuccessfully
For my father's acceptance
And approval.
I have my suspicions
Why he could not,
Or would not,
Give me those things
And I hurt because
If I'm right,
I was but
The innocent result
Of a teenage mistake
He regretted.
I had hoped
He would eventually
Not hold me responsible
For my own existence,
But it was not to be.
He died while
Keeping me estranged
And while I've moved on
From the grief
Of his passing,
I have not been able
To do so
From the loss of chances
For knowing he loved me
Or at least for peace
Between us.
This really moved me. While I was close to my dad, my sister wasn't. When he died she mourned losing the opportunity to ever be close to him. She said he never understood her, but I feel that she couldn't accept him either. It was sad. Interesting enough, my mom and I never became close or even comfortable with each other until I was 50
Thank you for revealing this tragedy in a poem. I can't imagine what it was like, being a man who always was in conflict with my father but he always bragged about me to others anyway for my accomplishments.

Estrangement from a parent such as you have described here, the lack and/or the loss of love, a terrible thing to bear, and yet the question of responsibility raises its telling head. How can a child be held responsible for such a situation far beyond its understanding and control. Perhaps it is time to let go of something one never should have owned.
