For Memorial Day. Thank you to all our troops, those fighting now, those who fought in the past, those who paid the ultimate cost, those who are still paying. Some wars must be fought, some never should have been but regardless, you and your families deserve our respect and gratitude for your love of country and your many sacrifices.

Coming Home
By La Belle Rouge

she waited and tried
not to watch the nightly news
though compelled to see
corpses in uniform laid out in rows
and to wonder.......

was one of them him?

she waited and pictured
his smile and how handsome he looked
in his dress greens at her prom
she remembered his hands
his lips......his touch in the night

would he come home whole?

would he come home at all?
when he did come back at last
she could only remember ....him
before the war, before he died inside
in a foreign jungle airlifting corpses

the cruelest wound of all

was an unappreciative country
no hero’s welcome, applause, parade
jeers and spit at the airport
wounds so deep not even her love
could begin to heal his pain

rows of corpses, one of them was her

You have an incredible gift of poetry. Your poem is a compeling and loving insight. This one makes my heart cry out for all who have suffered the personal tragedy of war...it is a truly personal glimpse into the feelings of family and veterans. Well done my friend.

God bless you. Kathy

This is like receiving a thousand lashes plus the salt that follows... this hurts! Agony upon agony which is sadly often all too true. Thank you for penning this with such realism, Belle. I could not begin to even go there. That picture brings me to my knees. Bless you and please be well. Love, Kate xx

Horror in your words bring back memories as I waited for the return of my husband, I thank God daily for his safe return, but still cry for those who are living daily with the emptiness of their loss one.
Thank you for sharing LaBelle.

the cruelest wound of all

And far too many have had to endure this. I often wonder if we as a nation, will ever learn.

Coming back from Nam, many of us got jeers and spitting, despite wearing in our uniform upper sleeves the flag of the United States of America. We regreted then, not to have been coming back in a bodybag.

Heartwarming tribute to our brave troops...it's as about as real as it gets, Belle. Thank you so much for this patriotic gift of poetry you serve us this Memorial weekend...know that I always love you and cherish your quill to the bleeding heart...burning the midnight oil with you...be well always, La Belle Rouge...

Too many deaths from the war and making people all over so sad each time one near their home is sent home dead. The ones who come alive have scars inside that will never heal either. And the maimed, who knows what a life they will make anymore.
