Those who lived through and fought in WWII are leaving us so quickly now. They are a brave generation of men and women who paid a high cost for the safety of our country and the world. This poem is dedicated to them.
Sweet Summer Of '42
By La Belle Rouge
He was young, and so was she
too young to know such battles
too young to see what he would see
It was time to play, to find himself
too swiftly passed the life they knew
when duty called him to take leave
of their sweet Summer of forty two
She liked his smile and he knew
he could live forever in her eyes
like in the Summer of forty two
A time of love and deep desperation
A time heart to give, to love and live
to sacrifice lives for a grateful nation
She loved his smile his tender lips
the way he kissed her breathless
the exploring of his timid fingertips
Her soft, teary eyes begged him to stay
but go he must, what could he do?
Youth ended in the Summer of forty two
Swore she’d wait, but in his heart he knew
she would not be waiting his return
She was too young and he was too
but she kept him alive with a memory
and that was good enough at the time
In his best thoughts he could still see
how she loved him as only she could do
in his dreams of their Summer 1942
She waited for him, true to their love
She waited to hold him close again
She waited and prayed to God above
But he never came home, he died alone
And though she went on living
moving on she never could quite do
Her heart always remained in
the sweet Summer of forty two
its a shame that time passes and wipe away the good it makes you wonder about the future with all these soft kids and teen who think thaey don't have to work and can jusrt feed off others
LaBelle,
this is a true tribute to all who made the ultimate sacrifice and your gentle simple style in this has the necessary and appropriate dignity. A beautiful crafting.

My tears flow as I read this delicately penned piece. In my family there is only one of five uncles left and in Robert's family, only his father remains. Really hurts to say good bye.......
He was seventeen in the sommer of 42, lied about his age and joined the Marines, wade thru the waters of Omaha Beach and was swallow by the war, far far away, but he never forgot her.
A poem, nice done to those old soldiers, someone still remember them.
Captures the heart, the mind and the soul...my first book Red Soil was about a young soldier much like this who left behind a new bride, pregnant and didn't see either again for over four years...he was my Dad. Wish I could still get copies of this book but sadly it is now out of print or I would send you one.
