Darkness

some poems should never see the light of day
maybe this is one of them
maybe not

I've been in desolate, dark places before
met death up close, personal
slept with pain

you truly thought you'd kill me, didn't you?
there are worse things than
hunger and cold nights

you thought I would stumble in the dark
cave in to the sharp pain
you didn't know

darkness has been my constant companion
and there are worse things
than no food, no roof

ghosts of memories and ghouls of regret
don't scare me anymore
I don't care now

that you wanted to kill me again and again
I'm still alive, still sane, still myself
there's a light inside me

so do your worse, whatever your devising
darkness is a familiar refuge
I don't fear it or you

So glad you came back to share this with us. This poem is so full of anger and retaliation for something done… Something horrendous, "again and again."

And then I see it listed as a memoir, making it even more diabolical. But it is Halloween time and you always loved to write Halloween poems.
