On Discovery Health Network, they had a program about an extraordinary little girl, Zubaida, from Afghanistan; she was burned in an accident involving an oil lamp. Doctors told her family to take her home to die; nothing could be done. Medical doctors in the United States heard about her condition and flew her here; over the course of a year, this young girl endured 13 painful surgeries and much physical therapy to release the scar tissue restricting movement in her face, neck and arms. She returned to Afghanistan afterwards, scarred but beautiful compared to what she had looked like after the accident.
This poem came to mind while watching the program.
flame kissed face eyes downcast forced to look at melted neck shoulders upper chest arms pinioned prisoner of burns-- shame kissed face what once was beautiful has been seared "take her home we can't do anything LET HER DIE" it burns-- pain kissed face little girls should not have to live like this--many surgeries bandages therapy for burns-- fame kissed face she returns from the land that promised hope for her she is home beautiful she survived the burns--
