"SPRING CLEANING" (PROSE)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

i spent the better part of yesterday
cleaning out the closets of my life,
discarding the trash that had collected
layers of dust over many years.

it was time for some major spring cleaning,
a time for renewal and for change--
there was no room for the new attitudes
being delivered this afternoon.

i started by throwing out bitterness,
which had grown far too comfortable.
anger and prejudice were next to go;
fear didn't stay around much longer.

a couple of 'woe-is-me' moments squeaked
from behind boxes of negatives
culled from the bad memories of the past,
but the cat took care of them quickly.

with the walls freshly washed and the floor mopped,
the windows of shame were next in line
to be thoroughly cleansed of fossilized
beliefs that they'd never be perfect.

the mirror that cried when i looked at it,
convinced that beauty had no place here,
burst into tears of happiness when it
realized that it had been lied to.

when the boxes of garbage were thrown out,
the entire place glowed with inner
light, radiently anticipating
the arrival of a brand new start.
