Thunder In The Blood (Friendship Dance)

Jake George's poem, "Pow Wow," recalled a time when I went to a Native American festival. This is dedicated to the People who included me, a wasichu (white person), as one of their own. Thank you.

Poem Artwork

Gathered together,
many Nations;
different languages,
beliefs, traditions.
We become One People
when the drums
thunder in the blood.

Young, old, no matter;
the Great Spirit
welcomes all want to
preserve our culture.
We assemble in peace ...
join us in
the dance of friendship.

OOOOooooo yes!! And I reckon it is ALL in the drumbeat: the pulse and the rhythm of life. "Thunder in the blood" is spot-on Karla, and reckon that's why I just can't resist the urge to dance when the beat is on!! Gotta luv it! TY Kate xx

This is wonderful, Karla, and a fitting tribute to Jake George's poem, too. What a wonderful thought - all joining as one people in friendship. We can only dream.....

Peace. Joyce

Sound like a sure-fire winner to me. It goes to show that people can "get along" whatever their diversity. Only thing is that when people begin nit-picking the finer details of these kind of relationships that problems arise. That's sad.

Pow Wows are marvelous,Karla; I've been to many of them through the years; and like you, have danced the dance of friendship. Truly a wonderful learning experience.

Karla,

I hope someday to go to a Native American pow wow and see this dance in person (or partake in it if The People will let me; I'd LOVE to be included~ :) ). That would be awesome! Excellent write, and I love the high energy and spirit that this beautiful poem possesses! BRAVA; very well done!

((((HUGS)))) and much love, your twin sister, Karen Lynn. :D

Savin' this one! :)

Karla,
You were dead on when you wrote this. When we offer intertribal dances at the Pow Wows it is for those not of our culture to come into the Sacred ring and dance.

You asked about the veteran dance. All veterans are invited into the ring when the color guard brings out the Eagle staff and flags to start Grand Entry. You as a veteran would have been invited in too.

Just remember when you dance in the circle, you are joined with not only those there but each of their ancent relatives too.

My father crossed over almost ten years ago. But I feel him by my side when I dance and it makes me smile. Ten years ago after he crossed over I went to the trout stream where he and I fished for many years. I gathered up a few maple sticks from the ground. I made a turtle dance rattle years ago with the one. The other I saved to make a drum stick.

Ten years has passed and just today I found the drum with the spirit that talked to me. Now I will make the drum stick...

This is a warm and touching write, Karla. We have ceremonies here about once a month at most Nations and we have many Nations in New Mexico. The ceremonies remind us of what is truly important in life and that there is but one "people" and one "Great Spirit" no matter what name we know Him by.
Take care,
Sherry

Wonderful Karla! I too was invited to a similar event in the north woods of Wisconsin. It was a spiritual enlightenment for me. Excellent poem!
