The more things change, the more they stay the same ...

Poem Artwork

...  Close my eyes and find myself
back in the sixties:

          people callin' for change;
          protestin' the war;
          burnin' the flags of anger
          and melancholy;
          wavin' high the banner of
          apathetic rage,
                                      marchin' down the streets, marchin'
                                      until feet are sore;
                                      throats are raw from yellin' for
                                      civil rights, save the
                                      Earth, save the animals, but
                                      nothin's bein' done.
          Hollerin' for drugs, baby,
          let's get hiiiiigh, baby;
          free love, baby; oops, there's a
          baby on the way ...
          an abortionist will take
          care of the baby.
                                      Parents are square; cops are pigs;
                                      screw authority;
                                      let's kill God; He ain't no good;
                                      the East, where it's at;
                                      let's run away together,
                                      sick of life at home ...

Opened my eyes, found myself
not so far removed ...

(c) 2007, Karla Dorman (4/10)

Now that was one intense flashback to yesteryear and a dizzying fast-forward to the present. The parallels can't be denied and sometimes make it scary to see how we keep jumping on and off the same merry-go-round of history. Great thought-provoking poem.

Karla, excellent pen...and thanks for the flashback...as I recall I was there through the whole mess and came out on the other side unscathed. And it is true...We (society on the whole) do not learn from our mistakes. BRAVO to you!

Thanks

This is excellent, Karla!! About the ONLY things that aren't the same ... us ladies burning bras, and the guys, their draft cards. A wonderful journey through time -- sure brought back memories for me!

As Art says, and you so excellently have written, "what goes around comes around'...methinks humanity isn't as clever as we think;-)

History has a tendency to repeat itself, and though now adays the protest might seem for different reasons, a lot of the same is still going on, you bring forth this revolving door within your work...

nicely expressed through....poetry...

I believe I dated that guy in the graphic, Karla, LOL. You're "Talkin Bout My Generation" here. I have thought a lot about how we all thought we were going to change the world back then, but we were just a bunch of loud-mouthed kids who did nothing more than make noise, we certainly didn't take it upon ourselves to cause any real change. We just "turned on-tuned in-dropped out" and never made the differences we thought we would in the world. Today we are still giant gasbags, spouting about how everyone else is to blame for everything that doesn't please us and still we do nothing to make things better and take no responsibility for the way things are. You nailed it with this one, Karla.
Take care,
Sherry

brought back memories, Karla ... the 60's was an extremely salient era ... it allowed people to express opposing ideas and brought about change ... for good or bad ... depends how one interprets its significance and incorporated its effect into their lives ... at least some great music came out of it ...

Actually the 60's were really turbulent times with all the varied terrorist groups (black panthers, the seven, hell's angels, others I can't recollect) and they were really extreme. We have a few foreign groups conducting terror now with heavier firepower, but I believe the 60's had more of those folks a lot closer to home.

I know DC had real difficulties such as the Resurrection City and War Protests along with other demonstrations. The city closed a lot during those times.

It seems we forget those aspects of the 60's fanfare.

Nice reminder.

Broght back memories baby oh yeah, I can't say that the sixties were all bad or all good. They protests did bring about change and did end a war but free love also triggered aids and other by products of the sixties that weren't good. Apathy those wasn't as rampant asit is today. Good thought provoking write.

Grüss
Odin = TEUS
Deus

A SALUTE TO ZEUS.

Translation: ZEUS = ODIN; Woden and Wotan. BTW, tomorrow is Wednesday, dedicated to WODEN ~and celebrated in all Provinces of the ROMAN-GREEK empire~ but in Spanish, it is dedicated to MERCURY, so it is going to be MIÉRCULES.

I have enjoyed the reading of "Lost In The Sixties Tonight".

Grüss Gott!

I salute You, Poet.

Seems like life has stalled. You said it best: "The more things change, the more they stay the same". An excellent, heartwrenching, thought provoking poem you have penned, with eyes wide open. Very well done, Karla; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twink, Karen Lynn. :(

So true.

Instead of killing God, we should do away with all those who presume to SPEAK for God and add in their own BS.

You do the best rants!
