Written a few years ago, this poem reminds me sometimes even everyday things may affect people differently. But with time, everything can be put in perspective.
The Picture
I saw it that very first time
It had never been there before
A moment in time, posted with pride
Screaming out from sterile décor
A family of boys for all to see
My throat tightened in pain
My eyes were glued to that picture
I had seen it in my brain
I have boys who are angels above
My family portrait a collage
A few short years of memories
And I grieve still for them all
My face transfixed, you followed my gaze
Can you see the tears in my eyes?
“Those are my boys,” you said with a smile
And handed me your prize
In my mind I know the faces well
One with an impish grin
Each vying for attention
An image of what could have been
Form the words, the proper phrase
Smile and regain control
“A lovely family, you must be proud”
Experiences come with a toll
A picture pinned up by a desk
It wasn’t even mounted
But every time I stared at it
I suddenly felt haunted
Week after week I’d deal with it
Looking away or sneaking a peek
Envy is not my style
And pain is not unique
Now when I see the picture
I can smile and just say hi
It doesn’t hurt me anymore
There’s no more need to cry
I finally found perspective
Although it took some time
Your boys look down on you at work
It’s relative, but so do mine

There is much truth in this poem, RaeLynn. When others seem to dote on their families, while we're suffering a grieving period, the discussions can be painful. Time heals wounds; life moves forward, but memories and pictures still remain. Pictures provide grief in the short term, when a loved one is lost, but in time, they provide a wonderful reminder of joy each loved one brought to our hearts. That, in itself, provides comfort.
