Nearing the place where man must go alone,
What thoughts go through the mind?
Did I love my life,
Was it a chore and nothing more?
Looking back, did I do for me,
Did I spend my precious time,
Pleasing other people?
The parents,
The wife,
The creditors.
Did I create more than children?
Was I loved?
Did I take time to “See” things?
Did I grow flowers just for the joy of beauty?
Did I climb mountains?
Did I feel guilty or selfish,
For taking time for me?
If my sole purpose in life was to,
Always do for others,
I think I may have missed out.
YOUR RiGHT, YOu would of missed out!

One wonders what comes to mind when nearing the summit. I hope I'm not even close to the summit of my life, but I can tell you what I thought about every time I reached a mountain's summit (and it's been a few):
"I'm the luckiest damn fool alive!!!! Thank you God for giving me such a beautiful day!"
When my ticker's up someday, I sure hope to be thinking the same!

Deep thoughts that take courage to ponder! Superb sharing Walt, and most of us can look back with some regret,because we usually find out too late that to have harmony life needs balance. Taking time for all things is the way, but doing it is another matter;-)

Excellent thoughts Walt..
My aunt and uncle climbed the Great Tetons that was discovered by Hillary and Tinsing. They named their English Bulldogs Tinsing and Hilary after these great climbers. Adventuresome people are hard to find anymore.

There are many instances in life that bring us to taste the "Nearing the Summit" and the taste could be quite an eye-opener! You don't know whether its bitter or sweet! I guess it just depends on whether or not a lesson was learned! We must refurbish the soul...We must continue opening the gift and putting it to good use!

If in your last verse, you, as you say "missed out" it may be, because you were looking at the wrong summit. You have written a powerful and important piece, which I think should be read by all.
