Sailing once again the freedom of the sea calls me,
We reached the outer marker,
Becalmed, time for lunch.
The only sound was the gentle lapping of the swells against the hull.
With seas appearing smooth as glass,
Not a sound called out to me.
Just then a bell atop the marker began it's toll.
I listened to it's deep rhythmic sound,
Every four or five seconds or so....Dong.
Calling out it’s warning of impending shoals.
Time for sailors to pay attention,
Dangerous waters were now approaching.
It came to me suddenly this haunting sound could have two meanings,
Depending upon which way you're heading.
Returning from the depths a safe harbor awaits,
Sailors and fishermen at the end of their journey.
Then I felt this lonely toll to be a reminder,
To those headed away from a safe harbor.
As I listened I felt each toll could be,
Once for each sailor lost at sea.
Slowly the bell of November rang.
With a meaning for me to find,
But only here,..... in my own mind.
WOW! Beautifully felt in my heart! Walt.
We fish near one and I feel stunned every time he gongs...
I can just see you mind running amok when ALONE and not feeling lonely! With the sea and its obscurities to keep you company!
...and I imagine this time of year can be a dangerous and changeable place even just offshore. "The Bell" or the buoy is a place I'd love to go like you did here, but never get to. I've been dreaming of fishing around one in a small boat since I was a kid.
Good realistic poetry with it's "warning bell"...
Yes, you capture that lilting haunting so well, Walt. In its many moods and interpretations. It summons and beckons - not least of all, kindling remembrances both happy and sad. Very atmospheric. xx

I love to read poems about the sea...this one is a bit eerie...well done! Love Holly
This reminds me of an empty pier on a night covered with a dense fog hearing that irregular buoy's bell wailing as now and then waves will make it to lean from side to side as you wait for the boat that will never come...but you will wait...
bloody creative Walt -- I like this rendering very much -- stay at sea a while longer if these are the inspirations you need to create a few more poems like this for us -- red, right and returning? -- peace to you my dear friend -- JMW
