"The unexamined life is not worth living."
Carl Jung

Poem Artwork

Learning new ways,
To come to terms with old demons.
Wrongly thinking this or that,
Rearranging thoughts.
Not an easy proposition.

Not so much the issues themselves,
But confronting brings the pain.
A pain not physical,
That would be an easy recovery.

Pain of an emotional sort,
Dragging out the past,
Examining feelings and responses long buried.
This is true pain.

Thankfully there is hope for the introspective,
With the steerage of an expert.
Skilled in the foibles of man,
A good therapist listens, then explains the way.
Helping one away from old feelings,
Of self-loathing and despair.

Changing old ways of thinking isn't easy,
To leave behind despair.
But thankfully if we want there is,
Someone to help out there.

Geez! Walt!! I could've written this too. You nailed it Walt! Learning that we aren't immortal is frightening and and a huge wake=up. I dealt the cards at the table too.....I have the scars to prove it.
I'm very proud of you and this write is very mature for me.
Love you,
Susan

We most certainly all need therapy of one kind or another, Walt. We would be foolish to think otherwise, though it is still seen as resorting or admitting to "weakness" by some ignorant people. I am firmly of the belief that we are all three-year old children locked inside our adult bodies and having learned "adult" behaviour and ways of coping. But, scratch where an emotional pain hurts or itches and I reckon much can be traced back to some trauma or root back then. Even "just" a good listening ear can be therapy. One thing's for sure - we can't usually find a way out of our own maze without knowing how and where to start - and that usually begins with recognition, admission and talking... 54 years and I have only known what pain really is these past half dozen or so. Formerly I have been deep-frozen. Good write! And helpful. xx

I think everyone should try it once. I went when I was in my teens, and it was an experience. Thanks for sharing this piece, Walt.

We all carry demons on our backs, Walt, and often the ones who cannot deal with them let those demons get the better of them...never seeking help....such a waste of life......Nicely done!

I think most of us need some help, sometime in our lives. Keep On, Keepin On, my friend.

Personal baggage. We all tend to want to carry it around with us. It is of know value other than the empirical information it affords us for comparative analysis. We owe it no allegiance. Only if we have failed to learn and prosper from it in character building have we failed to capitalize on its otherwise valueless experiences. Dump it and try not to amass anymore. You and I both know Walt that it is only by personal desire and perseverance that we will move on and bury the past. Good luck. I bid you love peace and the power to build anew. Jon Michael

Wish I could afford to "clear out" old memories by speaking with someone, but not now...anyway, who would want to hear of me whining...its bad enough the Den has to be subject to me when I do that...ed
