Karena, “Spy Mission”, Part One (Karena, Eagle Medicine Woman Series)

Karena paces as she prays

the elders will grant her counsel.
Just as she was about to give up,
Princess Pocahontas appears.

"Karena, the elders will see you,
my father wishes to speak to you first.
I shall tend to your children, you go
talk to Powhatan, He will see you now."

Karena runs to the chief's dwelling,
Powhatan lies quietly upon a fur bed,
she walks like an agile deer
prancing with skill and silence.

"Powhatan, your wish is granted,
I am here for your wisdom and guidance.
Please tell me of what you request of me."
"Karena, come closer, let me see your face."

Karena looks down onto Powhatan's face,
"You have requested counsel with the elders, What needs do you require? I wish to help you,
 What is it that you desire?"

"My Chief, I know that John Smith has been
injured, and must return to his mother land,
this could have grave consequences for our people.  He is the white man's chief, and our ally, I fear we will be attacked, upon his departure.  We must prepare to leave and find a safer ground for our people."

"Karena, I agree with you, but I am not willing to run away any longer.  The white man will have to kill me and my people first before we flee from this land."

"No, Powhatan, not flee, but find a better
place to live, to grow, and to find peace."
I have heard these words from the Great Spirit, and we must convince the elders to listen to me.

Powhatan is stubborn, and only wants to resist
due to honor and bravery.

"The Great Spirit has spoken to you? Has told you to run away like a coward? Does not sound like wise words of the Great Spirit, maybe it is Karena becoming a weak medicine woman, hearing the easy way out."

"No, Powhatan, I have seen visions, our people will be slaughtered by the new visitors, They are land hungry and hate our people more than the English do."

"Who are these visitors? Where do they come from? I must know, you must find out before they come here, now go, find this information and return to me before the sun sets on this next day."

Powhatan turns over and starts to chant
and recite prayers to the Great Spirit.
Karena silently leaves and begins to weep
knowing what is about to happen to this village.

"What am I to do? Powhatan needs proof,
this is not like him, he always trusts me,
what has gotten into him.  I must find proof,
in order to save this village from destruction."

She kisses her children goodbye,
and rides away toward the south.
Riding like the wind, toward the truth
before the sun sets upon the upcoming day.

Darkness surrounds her like a blanket of evil
spirits invading her mind.
She spies a settlement up ahead.
Dismounts and ties her horse to a tree.

She walks with the agility of a gazelle.
The fearlessness of a bear,
and the courage of a mountain lion.
No one will stop her now!

“I must find out what the white man is up to.
My people must be protected,
and I Karena, Powhatan Eagle Medicine Woman
will find the answers and give Powhatan the power to save his people and land from destruction."
