The Spring Of Awakening (Karena Series)

Karena rose to the sound of the rooster crowing,
She stretched  herself beneath a fur coverlet
A  blanket she made from the skin of a wolf
Tumas helped her with the skinning and curing of the hide.

They loved to touch as they worked,
and all of their people would laugh and joke
as they walked by the two love birds.
She smiled as she remembered the day they finished this coverlet.

In the evening buried beneath the warmth of the fur,
they made love like they were just newly married.
Tumas was a magnificent lover,
and she loved to be held in his strong muscular arms.

She always felt safe and adored by his embrace.
Their children were born from their deep love and devotion
No other couple could touch what they shared as man and woman.  They were destined to be together for eternity.

Karena's daydream was interupted.  
She put on her dress.  It was sewn from the finest cured deerskin dyed just a shade lighter than her own pigment.
She loved to wear this dress, it felt like her second skin.

She had sewn beads and shells along the edges
Each bead and shell held a special story of her life
that would be passed down to her daughter,
One day, Glowing Moon would wear this dress with pride.

Karena picked up her daughter and held her close.
“Glowing Moon, I know you cannot speak,
But in my heart I know you can hear and understand me.
You are to be my child of new visions.

You will be a visionary for our tribe.
One that will see far more than anyone can imagine.
One that will guide this nation toward a new life,
Changing the way we live forever.”

She put Glowing Moon down and walked outside of their dwelling.  It was a mist filled morning,
the river was flowing pretty briskly,
and the eagle was hovering nearby.  Perhaps he was stalking his next prey.

Something, however, alarmed her about his movement.
She felt a shiver of fright go through her body.
Oh please don't let it be a human person.
Just as she had those thoughts,

She heard a warrior screaming for everyone to be on alert. 
The English are coming, he screams.
Karena knew that trouble was beginning.
She must gather her family, and stay as close as possible.

The warriors stood guard at the River.
Usually they were posted there and at the edge of the reservation.
They stood guard up in the trees.
During the afternoon, there was a discovery made.

A Powhatan warrior’s body floated toward shore.
Karena recognized him.  It was her friend, “Big Sky”
She wept for his spirit to be released to the Universe.
He was a brave and caring man. 

Powhatan will be very angered by his death.
She must accompany the Mattaponi warriors
to return Big Sky back to her people.
There was to be war over this death, she knew it in her heart.

During the trip back to her village,
Karena looked at the leaves beginning to grow,
and the budding flowers with new eyes.
She was thankful to have made it through
another cold long winter.
"This is to be an awakening spring season".
